From Victoria BC’s Phillips Brewing Company comes their “Trainwreck 2012 Barrel Aged Barley Wine”. This barleywine pours a dark brown colour with a tan head. The aroma of the beer consists of malts, dark fruits, berries, hops, honey and oak. The flavour is very strong and includes lots of oak, malts, dark fruit, vanilla, hops and a ton of alcohol. This barleywine acts its age. It is young, strong and a bit obnoxious. Aging is strongly recommended to smooth out the flavour. The alcohol content of this beer is 10% I have a bottle in my cellar so we can see how it progresses.
Commercial Description: Here’s a little something to stoke your boiler. This barley wine is full of rich malt flavours and deep caramel aromas. Mildly carbonated, Trainwreck should be served at cellar temperature (8C). Be careful not to derail your caboose.
This beer was part of Mikes Craft Beer’s Barleywine Tasting. Three of the participants were very high on this brew but I was not one of them. I think it needs time to mellow personally but 3 against 1 can not lie I guess.
