From Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Fort Garry Brewing Co (Owned by Russell Brewing Co in Surrey BC) comes their “Portage and Main India Pale Ale” a West Coast Style IPA. Calling this brew a west coast style beer is a balsey statement by a Manitoba brewery. This IPA pours a deep almost cloudy amber colour with an off white head. The aroma welcomes you with a tone of grapefruit and floral hops. You will also detect some caramel malts on the nose but not much. The flavour is of grapefruit, more citrus, pine and some caramel malts but not much. This beer does contain a great bitterness. The alcohol content is 6.5% and the IBU is 60. This may not be the hop bomb that us west coasters are used to but I would say that it lives up to the West Coast IPA label and really exceeds it. Great job Fort Garry at making something that I would be Proud to say was Brewed in British Columbia even if it was brewed 3 provinces away.
Commercial Description: A “West Coast” style IPA, brewed with high quality malted barley, whole West Coast nad Manitoba flower hops! Brewed especially with whole hops to give it a solid 60 IBU and a strong, refreshing aroma of citrus fruits.
