Kracken Amber Ale (Barleywine?) – Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

From Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria BC comes the “Kracken Amber Ale” which I would more call a Barleywine especially when it is the base for Spinnakers Barleywine malt vinegar.  The Kracken pours a deep reddish brown colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of dark fruits, malts and a hint of alcohol.  The flavour is of dark fruit, oak, malts, semi sweet some mild hops and an alcohol finish.  The alochol content comes in at 8% and has an IBU of 40.  From what I understand this beer is aged on oak barrels for around a year but I am not 100% sure as I heard it in passing at the brewery.  Do not let the name fool you into thinking this is a normal amber ale.  This is a lighter barleywine to be sure but it is still a big beer and will not be for everyone.  If you are like me though and love the style then you should head over to Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub and get your 10oz glass!
