Mt Everest Barleywine – Scandal Brewing

From Pacific Western Brewing Company’s shadow brand ‘Scandal Brewing’ out of Prince George BC comes their Third Wonder Of the World “Mt. Everest Barleywine”. Like the Wonders of the World Series would suggest this is the third beer in the series.  By alcohol content alone this beer looks like a barleywine sitting at 9% so this is a good start.  The beer pours a light copper colour with an off white head (very light colour for a barleywine).  The aroma consists of big malts, caramel and some mild citrus and floral hops.  The flavour is of caramel malts, pine, citrus, citrus rind and a good hops bitterness to match up with most Pacific Northwest Brews.  With an alcohol content of 9% and an IBU of 65 this is a big beer to be sure.  This is a tasty beer to be sure but I would not call this a barleywine as it is missing the flavour profile of most barleywines.  I would put this beer more on the line of an Imperial Pale Ale and a big one at that.  Don’t get me wrong I am not slagging this beer in the slightest but I just think it is categorized incorrectly.

Commercial Description:  From the frozen roof of the world comes another potent Wonder of the Beer World, Mt. Everest Barleywine. At 9.0% ABV and 65 IBUs, it’s no secret this beer has borrowed some awe-inspiring properties from the planet’s most perilous peak. A tribute to the scandalous fact that one in ten climbers never return from their ascent, this bold and daring brew is our brewmaster’s strongest, most ambitious creation yet. Like attempting to conquer the world’s highest peak, it’s a scandalously rare experience from which many never return.
