Last time I was in Hawaii on the island of Oahu I learned of the Kona Brewing Company. I quite enjoyed the bottled offerings they had for sale. When we planned this family trip to Hawaii I was very excited that it was decided we would go to the big island so I could check out the brewery. Full disclosure I did not have any input on what island we went to but the family picked the right one! The brewery is located in the town of Kailua-Kona which is closest town to the International Airport. All draft beer sold in the state of Hawaii is brewed in this brewery and all bottles are actually brewed and bottled in Portland Oregon at one of the other breweries in the Craft Beer Alliance. This is done because there are no bottling plants in the State of Hawaii to keep costs down. Kona Brewing is not only a brewery though as it is also a great brewpub with amazing food! They use spent grain for all of their breads and their pizza is to die for.
Kona Brewing Company also takes sustainability very seriously. All spent grain not used in the food is given to local farmers. These farmers feed their animals the grain and then send the animals to the pub for the meals (haha). All condensation water from the air conditioners in the cold room is used to water the plants on site. The brewery also uses solar panels to reduce the reliance on the coal burning power plant. They are the only business in the state of Hawaii to get the highest green rating in the United States. More on their sustainability here. Kona brewing has great beer in bottles but their draft only options in the brewpub are really the stars of the show. I highly recommend anyone heading to the big island to head to this brewery at least once.
