The Spud Shack Fry Co is a great casual restaurant that makes amazing poutine, burger, frites to name a portion of the menu. The last Monday of every month they hold a comedy night called “Effin’ Good Comedy”. Due to Canada Day being on the last Tuesday of the Month this comedy night was moved a week forward.
The doors open up at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm. The hour gives you time to enjoy some amazing food and some great craft beer. I had their Effing Good Burger and the bacon, sour cream and green onion poutine (basically a baked potato).
The Effing Good Burger was perfectly cooked and was super juicy. The sauce choice was awesome and the addition of bacon makes everything good! The poutine is amazing! If you like a baked potato you will like this poutine! Fries with gravy, cheese curds, bacon, sour cream and green onions is basically the holy grail of poutine.
As I finished up dinner the comedy show began. The comedians that preformed this night were Ryan Gunther, Brett Martin, Art Factora, Andy Canete, Chris Gaskin and Simon King. All were very funny and had the room laughing. My personal favourite though was Simon King. He is a king of the dark humor and has a fan in Robyn Williams! He was close to bringing the room to tears as some points. The lighting was not great so the cell phone photos didn’t turn out all that great but here they are.
Check out some of the stand up by these comedians (There is probably swearing! Just a warning!):
As I mentioned the Spud Shack Fry Co has some great beer. They have two taps and a bunch of different rotating bottles. I had a Snapshot Wheat Ale by New Belgium Brewing, Bellerose by Brasserie des Sources and a Seasonal Citrus Wit from Dead Frog Brewery.
Snapshot Wheat Ale by New Belgium Brewing (Colorado, USA)
Aroma – mild fruity, grainy, wheat.
Flavour – very light wheat, mildly acidic and almost no bitterness. Very light in flavour.
Bellerose by Brasserie des Sources (France)
Aroma – citrus, wheat and floral aroma almost flowery.
Flavour – wheat, citrus, fruity, flowery, yeasty and overall refreshing
Seasonal Citrus Wit from Dead Frog Brewery (Aldergrove BC)
Aroma – bready, citrus and some other light fruit notes
Flavour – wheat, grainy, citrus and some mild spice notes.
I let the owner pick my food and beer for the evening as it made it a more interesting night than it already would have been. The food was amazing and the beer selections were very appropriate for the season! I look forward to going back for the next comedy night! It really makes a crappy Monday actually great! You really should look into going to the next Effin’ Good Comedy Night. Check Spud Shack Fry Co’s website to keep up to date with future events.
