Burton Baton – Dogfish Head Brewery

From Milton, Delaware’s Dogfish Head Brewery comes their “Burton Baton” an oak aged Imperial India Pale Ale.  The beer pours an amber colour with a creamy tan head.  The aroma consists of malts, bourbon, oak, fruit and floral hops.  The flavour is of caramel, vanilla, bourbon, oak, citrus, apple, sweetness and lots of hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 10% with an IBU of 70.  Being a huge fan of double India Pale Ales and almost any well made barrel aged beer this was a huge treat.  I would pick up more of this beer any time I saw it.

Commercial Description: This oak-aged hybrid has been gaining popularity over the past few years and is now available year-round.  For Burton Baton, we brew two “threads,” or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA.  After fermenting the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they’re transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month.  When enjoying the Burton Baton, you’ll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!
