Russel Brewing out of Surrey BC teamed up with Van Brewers to hold a home brew competition called the Golden Stag Home Brewing Contest. The 2012 winner of this contest was Dave Shea with his “Nautical Disaster Barleywine”. The beer was released around June 2013 and consumed in June 2014. The beer poured a ruby red/brown colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of dark fruits, caramel, citrus and some floral hops. The flavour is of earthy hops, bitterness, citrus, dark fruits and caramel. There is still still some warmth with this beer but it really has toned down over the last year. The alcohol content comes in at 9.3% with an IBU of 60. It was not the best Barleywine that I have had but I would not turn down another bottle if it was available. Good on you Dave for producing this beer and I look forward to seeing what you brew in the future.
Commercial Description: Introducing Nautical Disaster Barleywine – Grand Prize Winner, 2012 Golden Stag Home Brewing Contest. This is truly a limited-edition, single-batch beer made with Dave Shea’s actual home-brew recipe. A heaping dose of four different malts and a 3 hour boil produced a complex and luxuriously rich strong ale with a bitter finish. Good now, and brewed to allow flavours to blend and mellow for years to come. Only 250 cases were produced.
