Filthy Dirty IPA – Parallel 49 Brewing (Dec 3, 2014)

Beer Advent Calendar 2014

From Parallel 49 Brewing out of East Vancouver comes the “Filthy Dirty IPA”.  The IPA pours a cloudy copper colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of floral hops, citrus and tropical fruits with a definite pinapple note or two.  The flavour is of citrus, tropical fruits, orange, orange rind, malts, resin, pine and a hops bitterness that shines through and almost over everything else.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.2% with an IBU of 55 (originally labeled as 75 in Summer).  This is a nice IPA and a good successor of the Lord of the Hops.

Commercial Description:  It’s time to get down and dirty.  This west Coast IPA may be full of filthy amounts of frouty & tropical hop character, but it’s nothing but clean on your palate.  All those other IPA’s are a boar.  We’re here to hog the spotlight.

Definitely closer to 55 IBU than 75. Somewhat bitter without the strong citrus of many other craft IPA’s, I thought. Certainly more bitter, though, than what the big commercial breweries are passing off as IPAs but a bit tame for my palate. I did a taste taste with a CentralCity IPA that just happened to be in my fridge and the CC is much bolder and citrusy. Depends what you like, I guess.
