Bob’s Your Dunkel – Mt. Begbie Brewing Company

From Mt. Begbie Brewing Company in Revelstoke BC comes their “Bob’s Your Dunkel” a Winter seasonal.  The beer pours a deep cloudy copper colour with a light brown head.  The aroma is of dark fruit, wheat, earth, malts, yeast and alcohol.  The flavour is of dark fruit, chocolate, wheat, yeast, banana, earthy, mild bitterness and some alcohol at the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 8%.  I do not run to the Dunkel style to often but I will be back to this one before long!

Commercial Description:  Brewed in the Dunkelweisen tradition, this is a rich, unfiltered wheat beer (Weissbier) loaded with chocolate and Munich malts. Sure to warm your winter nights!

It should be pointed out that there is a difference between Dunkelweizen/dunkles Weissbier and a Dunkel, the first is an ale, the latter is a dark (Munich) lager, e. g. König Ludwig Dunkel, in my opinion a very good example of that style.

When I had this in the summer of 2013 I think I got old stock of Bob, I need to try this again when I see it. I thought the Dunkelweizen from Phillips wasn’t too bad either. Both of them have a much higher ABV than normal according to the BJCP style guideline. The would qualify as Weizenbock which raises the bar for flavors to expect.

    • Begbie never used to sell well in Metro Vancouver so I feel you could have gotten an old bottle. Now they seem to sell faster as I often have trouble finding their beer here.
Styles can get so confusing some times with so many small variations on very similar styles and even some styles that are not bound by ale or lager yeasts. Thanks for some clarification!
