From Andina Brewing Company in Vancouver comes their “Totuma Kolsch”. The beer pours a golden colour with a white head. The aroma consists of grain, citrus, sweetness and floral hops. The flavour is of gain, lemon, sweetness, grassy and low bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 4.5% with an IBU of 22. While I do not usually pick up Kolsch brews this one is very well made and enjoyable.
Commercial Description: Pours a very clear straw yellow. Aromatics of light stone fruit with a complimenting malt biscuitiness and a clean crisp taste with just a hint of noble hops. This style’s fermentation process yields a light, vinous character which is accompanied by a slightly dry, refreshing finish. Totuma is a bright, flavourful, and approachable beer. “Totuma” (Toh-Too-Mah) is a container made from the Calabash plant. The tree, also known as gourd, was cultivated by the Andean natives to use as bowls to serve water or chicha—the corn brew of our ancestors.

From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario comes their “Lug-Tread Lagered Ale” a Kolsch. The beer pours a yellow colour with a white head. The aroma consists of grain, bread, citrus and floral hops. The flavour is of biscuit, grain, lemon, herbal hops and a grassy finish. The alcohol content comes in at 5.2% with an IBU of 21. I do not hut these kinds of ales out personally but this one is definitely right on point for a lagered ale. If you are looking for a good easy drinking beer you would be doing yourself a good deed to pick this beer up.

From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario comes their “Haters Gonna Hate Imperial Kolsch”. The beer pours a yellow colour with a white head. The aroma consists of grain, biscuit, lemon, citrus and floral hops. The flavour is of grain, bread, lemon, citrus rind, wheat, grassy, resin and mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 7.1% with an IBU of 40. As an Imperial Kolsch goes this is probably one of the best versions I have been able to try.
Commercial Description: Haters Gonna Hate is an extra-strong interpretation of our flagship beer Lug Tread, which is a Kölsch-style lagered ale. Tropical aromas and a mildly “catty” character are contributed with the addition of some Nelson-Sauvin hops.
Food pairing as per brewery: Chili-lime + garlic prawns, feta vinaigrette, Korean BBQ beef short ribs (Galbi), kimchi, ripe surface-ripened cheeses like La Sauvagine or Madawaska.
From Twin Sails Brewing in Port Moody comes their “Dry Hopped Kolsch”. The beer pours a mild cloudy straw colour with a white head. The aroma consists of citrus, grain and floral hops. The flavour is of citrus, lemon, grain, bready, grassy, sweetness, mild bitterness and an almost herbal finish. The alcohol content comes in at 5.1%. Once again this brewery gives us a beer that will be a this summer.
Commercial Description: Light bodied German Ale dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Haullertau Blanc hops. Subtle fruitiness from German ale yeast blends well with bright melon and berry notes from the hops.
Moody Ales and Fuggles and Warlock have collaborated to bring us Pears in White Satin, an Imperial Pear Kolsch.
The beer is a nice orange-gold, slightly cloudy with some slightly green highlights. The head mirrors the name, a white satin look with fine bubbles.
The nose is all about the pear, it dominates the aromas. There are some subtle hop undertones, mostly lime and orange citrus with a little bitter orange peel.
The flavour brings up smooth pear with a hint of mint, a little bitter grapefruit and orange. Honestly, when I first tried this beer I found it a bit too harsh but letting it sit for a day has let the flavours blend much better.
