Tropical Milkshake ISA – The Parkside Brewery

From Port Moody’s The Parkside Brewery comes their “Tropical Milkshake ISA” their Anniversary beer.  The beer pours a murky orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruits, juicy hops, lactose and floral hops.  The flavour is of tropical fruits, juicy, lactose, resin, earth, dank hops and some bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.6% with an IBU of 40.  More dank and bitter than your average Milkshake IPA but I quite enjoyed it.

Craft Beer Market Vancouver (Anniversary) – November 5th, 2014

Exactly 1 year ago on Novermber 5th Craft Beer Market opened its doors in Vancouver.  Craft Beer Market opened with a ton of fan fare as it was boasting around 140 taps of beer.  To say the first year was a success would be the understatement of the year.  It is always hard to get a reservation here and it always seems to be very busy!

They released some stats about how much beer was consumed and I find it pretty amazing.

Like always Craft Beer Market treated its party guests to a fee glass of beer in this case from casks from Bridge Brewing Company and Parallel 49 Brewing.  They also supplied lots of small appies and an order of their fish tacos.  With the food and beer culture in Vancouver there was a great mix of people in attendance.

Congratulations of One very successful year in operation!  Here is to many more years of great beer and food!

BC Breweries 30th Anniversaries

This year was the 30th Anniversary for three different BC Breweries.  First off there is Spinnakers Brewpub in Victoria BC the very first Brewpub in Canada.  The other two breweries that are celebrating their 30th are Vancouver Island Brewery in Victoria and Granville Island Brewing in Vancouver (Owned by Molson).  The craft beer boom may be going strong but these are some of the real pioneers for craft beer in Canada.  I would like to congratulate the breweries on fighting the good fight all these years!

All three breweries released a beer to celebrate this occasion.  Granville Island Brewing released a new 6 pack offering as the start of a new series of beers called the Under The Bridge Series and the beer was called Swing Span Amber Ale.  Read the review here.

Both Spinnakers and Vancouver Island Brewery released special one off bomber releases.  Spinnakers Brewpub released “30th Anniversary Grand CRU” while Vancouver Island Brewery released a “Thirty Years Imperial Red Ale”.  In great BC tradition both beers were very big imperial ales with tones of flavour that packed a punch.

Because Spinnakers and Vancouver Island Brewery brewed special one off releases I wanted to honor them together with a combined review.

Spinnakers Brewpub – 30th Anniversary Grand CRU

The beer poured a dark amber almost brownish colour with an off white head short lived head.  The aroma consisted of sweet dark fruits, caramel, candied sugar, wine, spices and some yeast notes.  The flavour was of sweet dark fruits such as raisins, earthiness, candied sugar, spices, Belgian yeast, tartness, some herbal notes, mild bitterness and some alcohol warming.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 20.  This beer although a little thin was very full of flavour and a really good commemorative brew.  I would like to see Spinnakers play around with this style more and untap the possibilities.

Commercial Descripiton: In celebration of our 30th Anniversary, we present our Grand Cru as a token of thanks. Brewed with UK Marris Otter Pale malt, Belgian yeast and dark candi sugar, our Grand Cru is a medium-dark, malt-forward, complex ale best enjoyed with friends.

Cheers to the next 30!

Vancouver Island Brewery – Thirty Years Imperial Red Ale

The “Thirty Years Imperial Red” poured a ruby red colour with a tan head.  The aroma consisted of sweet fruits, dark fruits, anise, sweet caramel malts, molasses which is very reminiscent of barleywines.  The flavour was of fruity with good notes of dark fruits (rasins), sweet Caramel malts, orange, citrus, rum, mild hops bitterness and an alcohol warmth at the end.  The alcohol content came in at 8.5% alcohol.  Other than Vancouver Island Brewery’s Hermannator Ice Bock this is their most complex and exciting beer to date (That I have tried that is).

Commercial Description:  For over 30 years we’ve lived the belief that one trend is here to stay – true craftsmanship and quality. With this in mind we decided to pay tribute to our long standing Piper’s Pale Ale and ramped up the recipe to create a big, bold and robust beer. This malty, well-hopped Imperial Red Ale is our way of saying thank-you for your support. Cheers!

Both of these beers are extremely well crafted brews and well worth being commemorative 30th anniversary beers.  I would like to congratulate all three breweries on 30 years of brewing and look forward to the next 30+!

Congratulations from Mike’s Craft Beer!

I was lucky enough to go over to Victoria and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Spinnakers Brewpub with the Brewery and locals.  Click here to check it out!

Spinnakers 30th Anniversary Party – Victoria

On May 15th, 2014 it was the 30th Anniversary Party for Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub.  Spinnakers is the oldest still operational Brewpub in Canada so I had to take a few days off work so that I could attend.

The party was set up in the parking lot with an outdoor stage, tents with beer taps and a couple tents selling memorabilia.  This is also the first event that I have attended since the BC laws changed for events with alcohol.  There are no longer separated beer gardens so people with children could come and enjoy this event and still have beer.  There was also a pig roast setup and the pork tasted amazing!  I arrived right at 3pm when the event started to really take in the party.  Here are some photos of the main event portion.

Spinnakers also wanted to involve all of the other Victoria Breweries in their party.  To do this they held a beer Olympics with lots of silly games! Each brewery put together a small team of participants and had a ton of fun!

The following are videos from the event.  Some are from the Beer Olympics and some are from the party itself.

Congratulations Spinnakers on your 30 great years in Victoria! Here is to the next 30 years of history for the brewpub. I really enjoyed coming over for the party and I look forward to the next big party you guys throw!

PANDAMONIUM The 11th Hour Anniversary Ale – Phillips Brewing

Produced only once in 2012!

From Phillips Brewing out of Victoria BC comes their one off beer “PANDAMONIUM The 11th Hour Anniversary Ale” a double IPA.  Being their 11th anniversary everything about this beer comes in 11’s.  Pandamonium pours a golden colour with a white head.  The beer smells of floral hops, citrus and pine with some sweetness hiding about as well.  The lasers blast any sweetness away though!  This beer is majorly hops forward with a shot of pine flavoring!  Hidden in behind all the hops there is some citrus hiding in there somewhere.  This beer sits at 11% alcohol and has an IBU of 111.  This is a slow sipping beer for me but it is super tasty.  “This beer has a fierce flavor.  To say it is bold would be like calling chrome yellow a pastel” (Carmen).

the bottle reads “Every 11 min. hops are added to a 111 min. boil for a total of 11 hops additions (Plus dry hopping of course).  Giant Mutant Pandas would want it this way.”

Look out for a Panda-zilla coming your way soon!  He has freaking lasers coming out of his eyes so take notice!

Tasting Suggestions from my Friend Carmen : Spicy Sausages, lamb kebabs grilled on the BBQ.  This needs a strong flavored meat otherwise it will absolutely dominate the meal.
