Muy Bonita Double Brown Ale – Funky Buddha Brewery

From Oakland Park Florida’s Funky Buddha Brewery comes their “Muy Bonita Double Brown Ale” a beer with apple, cinnamon and vanilla.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of apple, cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, coffee, chocolate and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, chocolate, coffee, apple, mild roasted malts with some bitterness and alcohol in the finish.  The beer came in at 8.5% with an IBU of 35.  This beer is desert in a bottle and well worth picking up if you find yourself in Florida or anywhere their beer is sold.  Funky Buddha Brewery is now owned by Constellation Brands.

Commercial Description:  The big sister to our Bonita Applebum Apple Pie Brown, Muy Bonita is a bigger, badder ‘bum. This double brown ale flaunts a bodacious body and a stunning combination of real cinnamon, vanilla, and apples. So thick, she’s like a hip hop song.

Stag Apple Scotch Ale – Tin Whistle Brewing

From Tin Whistle Brewing in Penticton comes their “Stag Apple Scotch Ale”.  The beer pours a deep red colour with a tan head.  The aroma is of apples and some other fruit, toffee, toasted malts and cinnamon.  The flavour is of apple, mild dark fruits, toffee, caramel, cinnamon, earth, resin and some bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at a fairly hefty 8%.  While often apple in beer is a sign of a bad beer (it can be an off flavour) the addition of real apples to this beer make for a really pleasing mix of flavours.

Vancouver Special IPA – R&B Brewing (R and B Brewing)

From Vancouver’s R&B Brewing comes the “Vancouver Special IPA”.  The beer pours a golden orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of biscuit malts some caramel, fruit and floral hops.  The flavour is of caramel, toffee, apple, citrus, pine, resin and medium hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  Not a true West Coast IPA but not quite an English IPA either so if you are looking for a good IPA without it being as bitter as the West Coast style but more than English Style this would be your beer.
