From Vancouver Island Brewing in Victoria comes their “Barrel Aged Hermannator”. The beer pours a deep brown colour with a red tinged head. The aroma consists of dark fruits, red wine, oak, anise, toffee, caramel, bready malts and sweetness. The flavour is of red wine, dark fruits, cherry, caramel, chocolate, toffee, earth, citrus rind and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 8.5% with an IBU of 25. This was a very interesting beer but it had little left of what Hermannator was sadly. I hope in future versions of Barrel Aged Hermannator they let the original beer shine thought a little more.

It soon became our flagship brew, the most anticipated beer of the year. 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Hermannator. To celebrate we’ve aged Hermannator in red wine barrels, leaving it with beautiful notes of red wine, sherry, and plum that will only get better with time. Hermannator Ice Bock is a well loved and established beer. By aging it in red wine barrels the plum and sherry notes are added upon to create a wholly different experience. Fruitier, brighter, and dangerously easy to drink. The additional 2 months of barrel aging leaves an aggressive red wine note that is sure to age beautifully for those that can resist drinking it all right away.
From Goose Island Beer Company out of Chicago Illinois comes their “Sofie” 2017 a Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale barrel aged in white wine barrels. The beer pours a cloudy golden colour with a white head. The aroma consists of wheat, grain, peppery, fruit, sweetness and some floral hops. The flavour is of grainy, wheat, citrus, lemon, orange peel, peppery, yeast, vanilla and sweetness. The alcohol content comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 20. Once again this one was quite enjoyable.
Commercial Description: Our sparkling Belgian Style Farmhouse Ale is wine barrel-aged with an abundance of hand-zested orange peel. Spicy white pepper notes contrast the citrus tartness. The light, refreshing, creamy vanilla finish will excite those fond of Champagne.
From Boundary Brewing in Kelowna comes their “2016 Vintage Pinot Noir Barrel Aged Baltic Porter” a very small batch of 250 bottles. The beer pours an almost opaque black colour with a brown head. The aroma consists of roasted malts, caramel, toffee, pinot noir, grapes, sweetness and some barrel. The flavour is of roasted malts, ash, anise, chocolate, caramel, oak, tannin’s, pinot noir and some bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 22. The Bourbon Barrel version of this beer is tasty but this version is next level and I am stoked I got the chance to try it out.
From Powell Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “5th Anniversary Ale” a Hazy IPA aged in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces for 6 Months. The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head. The aroma consists of brett funk, floral hops, pinot noir and oak from the barrel aging. The flavour is of brett funk, citrus rind, tropical fruit, melon, pinot noir, oak, resin, yeast and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 7.6%. This is a definite winner of a beer and very worthy of being the 5th Anniversary beer!
Commercial Description: Our 5th Anniversary beer features new and old world techniques. Starting with a Hazy IPA, agin it for 6 months in Pinot Noir barrels with Brettanomyces, and finally dry-hopping it with Ekuanot Cyro hops just before bottle conditioning. Barnyard brett meets hazy IPA.
From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their second of four beer of 2017 in their fellowship club the “Little Red One with Black Currants” a Lambic Style Ale. The beer pours a deep red with a reddish head. The aroma consists of black currents, dark fruit, red wine, oak and some tartness. The flavour is of black currents, dark fruit, red wine, balsamic vinegar, earth, tobacco, tartness and some oak in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 6%. This is a fantastic Lambic Style beer with a very full flavour profile and fits the Lambic style well. I can not wait for the last two releases of this years Fellowship.
Commercial Description: After months of tasting, note taking, and patience, we finally feel ready to announce that starting at 3pm this coming Thursday, November 16th we will be releasing our second Fellowship beer – Little Red One Batch 2 (LRO 2). This West Coast Lambic-Style Sour with black currants from the Fraser Valley has been barrel-aged for over a year and is bottle conditioned. We liked the character that the currants bestowed upon this beer so much in Batch 1 that we decided to add even more black currants for Batch 2! This beer pours a deep red with aromas and flavours of oak, black tea, and tobacco. The currants lend berry character but with a dry herbal note (rather than sweetness).
