Belgian Golden Strong – Moody Ales

From Moody Ales out of Port Moody comes their “Belgian Golden Strong”.  The beer pours a orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of bubblegum, banana, fruity notes and a sweetness in the finish.  The flavour is of bubblegum, banana, caramel, candi sugar, mild bitterness, spices and Belgian yeast. The alcohol content comes in at 8.5% with an IBU of 28.  This is a tasty Belgian style beer and a worthy addition to the Moody Ales small batch series.

Commercial Description:  The light body and soft, sweet malt character blend with the fruity aromas for a delicious and dangerous easy drinking beer.  Highly attenuated Belgian ale with fruity esters and low spicy alcohol and hop notes.

Steve’s Beer Advent Calendar Day 11 – Chimay – Red

From Belgium I have the Chimay Strong Ale.

It pours a cloudy baked cake brown that allows very little light through.  The carbonation is noticeable but lazy with bubbles almost meandering to the top to join the very white head of medium bubbles.

The nose has banana, clove and a fruity ester.

The flavours again show banana and a an acrid mineral quality which actually mellows the banana nicely.  The carbonation is sharp on the tongue and very noticeable because of the very light body.

Commercial Description:

The Chimay Red is the oldest of the Chimays. Its coppery color and sweet, fruity taste make it a particularly tasty dark ale.

Seeking Asylum Belgian Double IPA – Yellow Dog Brewing Company (AleSmith Brewing)

From Yellow Dog Brewing in Port Moody in collaboration with AleSmith Brewing out of San Diego California comes their “Seeking Asylum Belgian Double IPA”.  The beer pours an amber colour with a white head. The aroma consists of Belgian yeast, tropical fruit, sweetness and floral hops.  The flavour is of Belgian yeast, tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus rind, low malt presence, dankness and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 90.  Its no surprise to me that these two breweries would come together and make an awesome Double IPA!  Its probably almost gone off the market now but it was really tasty.

Commercial Description:  Seeking Asylum is a 8% abv and 90 IBU Belgian-style Double IPA co-created with San Diego’s Alesmith Brewing, described as “smooth and full-bodied with a west-coast twist. Imagine a west-coast DIPA mixed with a Belgian style triple!”

Blonde – Dageraad Brewing

Dageraad Brewing is one of the newest breweries in Metro Vancouver and is located in Burnaby BC.  Launching with two beer both of which are Belgian Style Ales they have been causing a bit of a stir locally.  The “Blonde” pours a golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of Belgian yeast, malts, wheat, grassy hops, citrus and some other fruits.  The flavour is grassy, bitter hops, malts, wheat, sugar, spices, Belgian yeast and a nutty finish.  The beer has an alcohol content of 7.5% but it does not show in the flavour much at all.  This is a great Belgian style blonde ale and anyone that likes Belgian ales should check this one out!

Commercial Description:  Crowned with a fluffy, white head and graced with a fruity, spicy, citrusy aroma, Dageraad Blonde is the pride of our brewery. A closer inspection reveals a note of nutty pilsner malt, whiff of noble hops, faint note of caramelized sugar and—when the beer warms—a sweet, floral breath of alcohol. And all that before you’ve tasted it.

Food pairing as per brewery:  Salads and deserts, semi soft ripened cheeses and charcuterie

Kasteel Rouge – Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck

O’hare’s Beer Club December 2013 Box

From Ingelmunster Belgium’s Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck comes their “Kasteel Rouge” a style of fruit beer.  The beer pours a dark ruby red colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of sweet cherries and candied sugar.  The flavour is of sweet/tart cherries, candied sugar and a minor bite to finish.  It almost tastes like a jolly rancher candy.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% even if it does not taste strong.  I should not have enjoyed this beer as much as I did as I do not have a sweet tooth but this was downright amazing.

Commercial Description:  Kasteel Rouge is a blend of Kasteel Donker and cherry liquor. The mix of these two excellent products creates an exceptional soft beer with references to the dark mother beer.

Food Pairing according to O’hare’s Beer Club notes are as follows: Cheesecake and Ice Cream
