From Strathcona Beer Company in Vancouver comes their “Brrr! Winter Radler”. The beer pours a red colour with a white head that has a red tinge. The aroma is more of less one of cranberry cocktail. The flavour is of cranberries with a hint of mandarin orange, mild tartness and a hint of biscuit malts. The alcohol content comes in at 4%. I am a fan of a good raddler and I like when other flavours are used to mix with beer than just grapefruit. This is really enjoyable and a great one to sip on this winter.
From Boombox Brewing in Vancouver brewing out of Dogwood Brewing comes their “Arcade Glow Pale Ale”. The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head. The aroma consists of citrus, biscuit malts and yeast. The flavour is of generic citrus, orange, citrus rind, yeast, resin, biscuit malts and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5% and has a North East haze. Boombox Brewing never disappoints. This stuff is really good!

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Mr Fungi Chaga Black Lager” a beer with Chaga Mushrooms. The beer pours a chestnut brown with a brown head. The aroma consists of earth, chocolate, mild roasted malts and biscuit malts. The flavour is of mild roasted malts, biscuit malts, chocolate, mild coffee, nuts and some earth. The alcohol content comes in at 4% with an IBU of 10. This is a really fun and tasty dark lager and comes in at a very sessionable ABV! Don’t let the mushroom scare you if you don’t like them as it does not taste like mushrooms.
Commercial Description: Mr Fungi is a crisp, dry rice lager coloured with the trendy ‘new’ superfood chaga mushrooms! Native to the Northern Hemisphere, we take locally grown chaga mushrooms and turn them into a thick, black tea which we add to our brew. Notes of coffee, earth and flower power. Real groovy stuff man! Give out some free hugs, start a drum circle and enjoy friend.
From Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks in Richmond comes their latest “Chrono “. The beer pours a copper colour with an off white head. The aroma consists of floral and herbal hops, lemon and mild biscuit malts. The flavour is of grassy and herbal hops as can be expected with fresh hopped beers as well as lemon, biscuit malts and medium bitterness in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 6.9% with an IBU of 66. Like all fresh hopped beers this one is very herbal and grassy with subdued bitterness. I quite enjoy this one and am glad they have done a full scale fresh hopped beer this year!
Commercial Description: Chrono Wet Hop IPA: Time is of the essence. Freshly picked Centennial and Cascade hops from BC Hop Co were immediately brought to the brewery and thrown into the brew within hours of picking. The magic of the fresh hops deliver a juiciness and dankness that we will never get from dried hops. Enjoy a light malt body and a citric blast from the wet hops!
From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their “HOPDEVIL (a.k.a. Cowichan Valley Bine)” Fresh Hopped Pale Ale a beer using fresh hops from Maple Bay Hop Company. The beer pours a golden colour with a white head. The aroma consists of herbal hops with mild malts and citrus. The flavour is of grassy and herbal hops, citrus, grapefruit, mild stone fruit, biscuit malts and some bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 4.5%. This is the first fresh hop I have tried from Iain Hill the brewmaster and it was in line with all of his beers. Very well made and full of flavour!
Commercial Description: The Hopdevil – that incarnate of the late summer storm capable of destroying hop fields before harvest – is feted each year by the farmers of Hoppeland, Belgium. After harvest, they parade & then burn effigies of the Hopdevil with the hope that he will be discouraged from returning. Of the opinion that a little superstition goes a long way, we raise a glass of HOPDEVIL – our fresh hop beer – to the prolonged absence of the Hopdevil in our local hop-growing regions. Brewed with Fresh Cascade hops from Maple Bay Hop Company this beer showcases the cones, using malt character only as a balance to the earthy & fruity hopiness. Flavours of honeydew melon & citrus escort this extremely session-able fresh hop beer.
Food pairing as per brewery: light savoury foods, spicy dishes
