Barleywine Barrel Aged – Black Bridge Brewery

From Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current Saskatchewan comes their “Barleywine Barrel Aged”.  The beer pours a deep reddish copper with a tan head.  The aroma consists of candied sugar, sweetness, toffee, dark fruits, red wine, oak and vanilla.  The flavour is of dark fruits, candied sugar, red wine, toffee, oak, fairly low bitterness and a mild alcohol burn to finish it off.  The alcohol content comes in at 10.5% with an IBU of 35.  I am a massive fan of Barleywine’s and this one is really enjoyable.  I am glad I was able to pick up a few cans while in Saskatchewan.

Commercial Description: Barrel aged for 10 months in recently emptied red wine barrels. Our Barleywine begins with a beautiful port and wet oak aroma, which translates into a luscious, warming mouthfeel. Lightly carbonated with a strong amount of bitterness to balance out the bold dark cherry, red wine, and brandy flavours.

Folklore Imperial Stout – Black Bridge Brewery

From Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current Saskatchewan comes their “Folklore Imperial Stout” a beer that is only available at the brewery.  The beer pours a black opaque colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of chocolate, toffee, anise, treacle, roasted malts and is overall sweet.  The flavour is of burnt coffee, roasted malts, anise, smoke, chocolate, treacle, toffee, earth, oak, vanilla, bitterness and alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at a big 11%.  If you have access to this beer buy more than one bottle and cellar it.  This was a very well executed Imperial Stout!

Commercial Description:  Aged in American white oak which gives the beer vanilla undertones pairing nicely with the roasted malt, bitter coca and black licorice flavours.

Milk Stout – Black Bridge Brewery

From Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current Saskatchewan comes their “Milk Stout”.  The stout pours a deep opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, chocolate and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of roasted malts, chocolate, lactose, earthiness and an overall sweetness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.3% with an IBU of 25.  This is a pretty darn good example of a milk stout although not the best I have had.

Commercial Description:   Darker doesn’t always mean stronger! A stout’s roasty signature quality comes from barley that is roasted and unmalted.  This beer pours a dark black with the aroma of dark chocolate and dried fruit.  The sweetness is balanced by the roasted malt, with a rich and creamy mouthfeel.  When possible please enjoy our beer from a glass to experience it fully.

Recommended serving temperature: 50°F/ 10°C.

IPA – Black Bridge Brewery

From Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current Saskatchewan comes their “IPA”.  The beer pours a copper colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruits, orange, malts, sweetness and a floral finish.  The flavour is of earthy, caramel, orange, tropical fruit, resin and a low hops bitterness in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 62.  With an IBU as high as 62 I would have expected this to be a bitter beer but it really came off more like an English IPA to me.  But I do enjoy and English IPA from time to time and I would recommend giving this beer a try if you are located in Saskatchewan or you have good connections.

Commercial Description: An objectionable IPA, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  An oily mouthfeel and powerful aroma come from large additions of both late and dry hops.  Inspired by the over-the-top IPAs that flow like water throughout the American West Coast.  When possible please enjoy our beer from a glass to experience it fully.  Recommended serving temperature: 45°F/ 7°C.
