From Cigar City Brewing in Tampa Bay Florida comes their “Guayabera Citra Pale Ale”. The beer pours a cloudy golden colour with a white head. The aroma consists of citrus, herbal and floral hops and a sweetness. The flavour is of citrus, melon, herbal, resin, hint of dank hops, bitterness and some bready malts. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 50. This Pale Ale is absolutely a great example of what I like in a beer of the style.
Commercial Description: Traditional throughout Latin America, the guayabera shirt combines style, functionality, form and tradition in it’s four-pocketed design. We at Cigar City feel the same reverence and appreciation for the guayabera that we do for the Citra hop varietal, an ingredient that imparts notes of tangerine, lime and berries to this traditional American Pale Ale. The exclusive use of Citra hops in this beer creates a flavor that’s at once unique and recognizable, while it’s dry, crisp character and moderate alcohol make it as refreshing and functional as a crisp linen guayabera.
From Steamworks Brewing in Burnaby BC comes their latest release the “Winter Lager”. The beer pours a copper colour with a white head. The aroma consists of bready and caramel malts with mild hops aroma. The flavour is of mildly roasted malts with caramel and bready malts as well as some earth, spices and mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.4% with an IBU of 30. As lagers go this one is not just your boring yellow fizzy lager and should be a nice compliment to the winter season especially if your not into dark beer.
Commercial Description: This comforting brew pours a deep copper and combines a rich toasted malt flavour with a restrained hop bitterness to create a well balanced, versatile beer. Our winter lager is a highly drinkable, yet complex beer with a rich aftertaste that will leave you yearning for another. An elegant lager perfect for longer nights.
From Cerveza De Lost Muertos part of Cerveceria Mexicana in Tecate Mexico comes their “Death Rides A Pale Horse Amber Ale”. The beer pours a deep blonde colour with an off white head. The aroma consists of grain, some citrus and sweetness. The flavour is of bready grains, citrus, grassy hops, mild bitterness and a sweet finish. The alcohol content comes in at 5.6% with an IBU of 18. This was a pretty good Amber Ale and I thank my friend that picked it up for me in Mexico. There seems to be some confusion on the ownership of this brewery.
From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Rizzla Rice Lager”. This beer is certified Gluten Friendly by both White Labs and Siebel Institute by having both labs test every batch of the beer to a threshold of 10 parts per million of gluten. The beer pours a light straw yellow colour with a white head. The aroma consists of mild bready malts, almost caramel, rice, citrus and a crisp finish. The flavour is of bready and grainy malts, rice, mild caramel, citrus, sweetness, mild grassy hops and a crisp low bitterness finish. The alcohol content comes in at 4.5% with an IBU of 18. If you are looking for a nice crisp clean lager this could be a good choice for sure. If you are looking for a gluten friendly beer this is definitely a good choice for you!
Commercial Description: Rizla Rice Lager is an easy drinking Asian style lager. A great session beer for watching sports, weather, and people. Brewed using rice properly, for flavour rather than filler, bittered with classic northern brewer hops to balance the rice sweetness. Makes a great house lager. Gluten reduced to less than 10 parts per million & it tastes great! Every batch is tested twice by two labs. All the flavour not the gluten!
From Love Shack Libations in Qualicum Beach comes their “Crafty Cream Ale”. The beer pours a straw yellow colour with a white head. The aroma consists of fruity notes, malts and some sweetness. The flavour is of stone fruit, peach, bready malts, spice, herbal hops and low bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 18. While this strayed from the standard cream ale flavours for sure I did enjoy it.
Commercial Description: This tricksy little number is constructed for easy drinking. A smooth, slightly sweeter ale with a rounded mouth feel. This is a gateway beer to the craft world.
