From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their fourth of four beer of 2017 in their Fellowship Club the “Mélange à Trois” a barrel aged Brett Bruin. The beer pours a deep reddish brown with a tan head. The aroma consists of brett funk, mild fruit, berries, malt, oak, chocolate and caramel. The flavour is of brett funk, sour, caramel, toffee, chocolate, roasted malts, smoke, oak, leather, earth, bitterness and citrus rind. The alcohol content comes in at 6.5%. Not the standard Bruin but it is a really good brew and I look forward to the 2018 Fellowship.
From Powell Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “5th Anniversary Ale” a Hazy IPA aged in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces for 6 Months. The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head. The flavour is of brett funk, citrus rind, tropical fruit, melon, pinot noir, oak, resin, yeast and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 7.6%. This is a definite winner of a beer and very worthy of being the 5th Anniversary beer!
Commercial Description: Our 5th Anniversary beer features new and old world techniques. Starting with a Hazy IPA, agin it for 6 months in Pinot Noir barrels with Brettanomyces, and finally dry-hopping it with Ekuanot Cyro hops just before bottle conditioning. Barnyard brett meets hazy IPA.
From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver in collaboration with Stillwater Artisanal out of Baltimore Maryland comes their “That New Trapp” a Funky Brett IPA labeled as a Hazy New England-Style Trappist Ale. The beer pours a lightly cloudy orange with a white head. The aroma consists of brett funk, stone fruit, tropical fruit and maybe a hint of floral hops. The flavour is of brett funk, tropical fruit, stone fruit, lemon, some biscuit and mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 35. Been a fan of Stillwater for some time and have been a big fan of Hearthstone Brewery since they opened and this beer is an amazing marriage of both breweries. Great flavours really do combine with this brew to make a North East IPA even if it is not as murky as it should be for the style.
Commercial Description: A funky brett IPA with an irresponsible amount of Citra, Mosaic & Amarillo hops fermented with a blend of reckless yeast strains, Brett B and Conan. A collaboration beer from Hearthstone and Stillwater Artisanal.
From Four Winds Brewing in Delta comes their “Saison Brett 2014″ a beer that was bottled on September 25, 2014 and consumed on August 28, 2017. The flavour is of tropical fruit, brett funk, earth, some astringency, yeast, earth and bitterness in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 28. While the cork wanted to shoot off of the bottle like a rocket this beer was tasting really good still. Just be very careful pouring a 2014 vintage.
Commercial Description: Aged in Okanagan red wine barrels, our Brett Saison is invigorated by wild yeast strain Brettanomyces, inviting hues of straw and earth.
From Halcyon Barrel House in Vankleek Hill, Ontario part of the Beau’s All Natural Brewing family comes their “Infinity Mirror Brett IPA” the very first release from the brewery.
