Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout 2017 – Cigar City Brewing


From Cigar City Brewing in Tampa Bay Florida comes their “Marshal Zhukov’s Imperial Stout” 2017 Vingate.  The beer pours a jet black colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, molasses, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, chocolate and some alcohol.  The flavour is of roasted malts, burnt coffee, ash, molasses, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, anise, dark fruit, maybe some umami, alcohol and a bitterness in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 11.2% with an IBU of 70.  This is a seriously big beer and right up my alley.  I wish I could have brought more of this beer back or visited the brewery while in Florida but there is only so much room in your luggage and we had to leave Florida in a hurry to avoid Hurricane Irma.

Commercial Description:  This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of blackstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and the beer finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with mushroom solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

Blacktop Oat Stout – Panhead Custom Ales


From Panhead Custom Ales in Wellington, New Zealand comes their “Blacktop Oat Stout”.  The beer pours an opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, anise, chocolate, ash and sweetness.  The flavour is of anise, roasted malts, smoke, ash, earth, mild chocolate, bitterness and some burnt coffee.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.5%.  If you enjoy a beer that is high and the roast you will really like this one.  I know that I did.

Commercial Description:  As self-confessed bogans we have a natural attraction to black, preferably matte, so Blacktop Oatmeal is close to our hearts. The key to creating a silky death metal monster like this is the caramelised Golden Naked Oats we’ve built it around. Sophisticates will detect the chocolate and coffee notes of creamy tiramisu. The rest of us will note that it matches our jeans.

Psycho Brew Brown Ale – Rossland Beer Company


From Rossland Beer Company in Rossland BC comes their “Psycho Brew Brown Ale”.  The brown ale pours a deep reddish brown with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, toffee, nuts and a semi sweet finish.  The flavour is of roasted malts, burnt coffee, ash, toffee, nuts, pine and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 45.  Its to bad this beer is only available in Rossland BC in the Kootenays as it is really tasty.

Black Strap Boot Strapper Porter – Beau’s All Natural Brewing (Crannóg Ales)


From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario co-operatively brewed with Crannóg Ales of Sorrento BC comes their “Black Strap Boot Strapper Porter”.  The beer pours a deep chestnut colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of molasses, coffee, chocolate and a sweet finish.  The flavour is of molasses, chocolate, ash, roasted malts, plum, burnt coffee resin and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.8% with an IBU of 30.  The body was a bit on the thin side but the flavour was right on point!

Commercial Description:  Blackstrap Bootstrapper is a classic British-style porter brewed with an addition of fairtrade organic blackstrap molasses. The recipe uses Challenger hops harvested from Left Fields, the certified organic farm on which Crannóg Ales stands, located in the sunny Shuswap region of BC.

Food pairing as per brewery:  Beef, oyster and porter pie (British traditional pie), bacon-wrapped scallops on the BBQ, dark chocolate pudding.

Three Bears Breakfast Stout – Trading Post Brewing


From Trading Post Brewing in Langley comes their “Three Bears Breakfast Stout”.  The beer pours an opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of ash, roasted malts, burnt coffee, chocolate, and oatmeal.  The flavour is of oatmeal, ash, roasted malts, earth, chocolate, burnt coffee and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.7% with an IBU of 40.  This is definitely breakfast in a bottle.  I would recommend maybe keeping the breakfast beer to camping in the summer though.

Commercial Description:  On a canoe trip down the Fraser, HBC chief factor Gavin Hamilton decided to go to shore to shoot some ducks. Armed with a double barreled fowling piece, he came face to face with three bears. He took the first two out with a single shot and reloaded just in time to take out the third which knocked him to the ground as it fell.  Brewed with dark roasted malt, Centennial hops and Republica Roasters coffee, this jet black oatmeal stout features notes of chocolate and espresso. Big, bold and surprisingly smooth, this “eye-opener” has a creamy tan head and is the great for breakfast or any time of day.
