From the brand new brewery in the City of North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay Green Leaf Brewing Co comes their “Stout”. The stout pours an opaque black colour with a brown head. The aroma consists of roasted malts, coffee and chocolate. The flavour is of burnt coffee, chocolate, roasted malts finishing off with a mixture of sweetness and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 35. Like their Pale Ale this is a very well crafted ale and I will be consuming more over the holidays if I have my way.
Commercial Description: Have you ever wanted to drink a chocolate cookie? We did, so we came up with our stout. We filled it with oats and Crystal and Chocolate malts to make it a dark beer with a pleasing sweetness and subtle roasted finish. We balanced our specialty grains with premium Pale malt and a meticulously monitored fermentation, leaving our stout so full-bodied it’s a beer you can practically chew!
Food pairing as per brewery: Roasted smoked or grilled meats, salty foods like ham, pretzels or cheeses, chocolate desserts and cheesecakes.
From Brooklyn Center Minnesota’s Surly Brewing Co comes their “Coffee Bender” an American Brown Ale flavoured with coffee. Coffee used in the beer is Guatemalan Finca Vista Hermosa Full City. The beer pours a deep brown colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of coffee, toasty malts, smoke and bitterness. The flavour is of burnt coffee, roasted malts, smoke and hops bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 45. This is a great coffee beer and tastes much like an iced coffee.
Commercial Description: Coffee Bender refreshes like an iced-coffee, is aromatic as a bag of whole beans as satisfies like your favorite beer. The Surly brew team has developed a cold extraction process that results in intense coffee aromatics and flavor bringing together two of our favorite beverages. Your only dilemma will be whether to finish your day or start it with a Coffee Bender.
