Cabernet Barrel Aged IPA – Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

From Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria BC comes the “Cabernet Barrel Aged IPA” part of their Brewers Reserve series.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of cabernet, oak, mild tartness and funk with a floral finish.  The flavour is of cabernet, oak, brett funk, some mild tartness, tannin and a lower bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.1% with an IBU of 30.  This was a really interesting take on an IPA adding wine, wild yeast and a barrel.  Keep up the good work Spinnakers!

Commercial Description:   Cabernet Barrel-Aged IPA is the eight release in the Spinnakers “Brewers Reserve” series. This unique brew was aged in Cabernet barrels from the Napa valley and is said to be full-bodied with a touch of tartness and Brett funk.

This single batch beer is limited to only 90 cases.

Consecration – Russian River Brewing Company (Aged Around 2 Years)

From Russian River Brewing Company out of Santa Rosa California comes their “Consecration”  an American Wild Ale or Sour Ale.  This bottle has been sitting since 2011 and is from batch 007 (Brewed August 21st, 2010 and bottled October 21st 2011).  This sour is aged for 4-8 months in Cabernet Sauvignon barrels with black currants, brettanomyces, lactobacillius and pediococcus.  The beer pours a brownish copper colour with a very small white head.  The aroma consists of cabernet, tartness, dark fruits, currants and lots of sour notes.  The flavour is of cabernet, grapes, big sourness, currants, oak and dark fruits.  This beer does not have an alcohol heat which is surprising as it has an alcohol content of 10%.  Finally I have been able to have a good amount of a beer by Russian River and I am super impressed!  It is to bad it is so hard get your hands on this beer unless you live in California.
