From Canmore Alberta’s The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company comes their “Barley Wine” 2014 limited Edition brewed at the original Brew Pub location (#622 Main Street Series). The beer pours a very deep brown with a brown head. The aroma consists of toffee, dark fruits, cherry and sweetness. The flavour is of caramel, toffee, cherry, dark fruit, earth, tobacco, resin, bitterness, sweetness and some alcohol. The alcohol content comes in at 8.7% with an IBU of 61. Not my favourite interpretation of the style but it is a tasty one none the less. I always like when people play fast and loose with beer styles.
Commercial Description: Grizzly Paw Barley Wine was brewed in 2014 at the original downtown brewpub location, and has been awaiting release since then. The 8.7% abv and 61 IBU ale is described as follows: A big luscious ale with flavours of apricot, plum and black currant mingling with a rich maltiness, balanced by a spicy hop bitterness and alcohol warmth which will continue to mellow with age.
From Canmore Alberta’s The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company comes their “Chinook Red IPA”. The beer pours a deep amber colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of sweet malts, earth, melon, citrus, toffee and brown sugar. The flavour is of earth, caramel, bread, brown sugar, melon, citrus, pine and mild hops bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6.6%. This is a pretty good Red Ale but I would not classify this as an IPA in the least. There just is not enough hops bitterness for the style.
Commercial Description: Chinook Red IPA is a 6.6% abv ale brewed using three malts (2 Row, Munich, Crystal) and three hops (Chinook, Target, Pallisade). The result is described as a “ruby colored IPA with sweet malt flavours balanced by a big hop presence.”
From Canmore Alberta’s The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company comes their “Moose Knuckle Winter Stout”. The stout pours an opaque black colour with a brown head. The aroma consists of roasted malts, coffee, caramel and smoke. The flavour is of smoke up front with roasted coffee, roasted malts, caramel and some hops bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6%. So far this is the most flavourful beer in the calendar. The overall roastieness is quite pleasing.
Commercial Description: Huge roast flavour and body. Created similarly to a traditional Irish Oatmeal Stout, this dark ale has heaps of character and will easily substitute for a full-blown meal. Received the Silver medal at Brewtopia ’98.
From Canmore Alberta’s The Grizzly Paw Brewing Company comes their “Big Head Nut Brown”. This Nut Brown Ale pours a reddish brown colour with an off white head. The aroma consists of roasty malts, caramel, nuts like hazelnuts and almonds and an overall sweetness. The flavour is of roasted malts, caramel, hazelnut and almond and an overall sweetness. The alcohol content of the beer is 6%. This is a very nice beer and I hope I will be able to get more of their beers in the future!
Commercial Description: This is a smooth, medium bodied classic brown ale. A crisp mouth feel, with sweet caramel body, mild hops, and gentle finish, lend to the easy enjoyment of this beer. Brewed from pale malts and four varieties of roast malts this beer has a pleasant malty character. Certainly not a stout, this is a clean, roast flavoured beer. A great alternative to both the Red and Stout.
