From Steamworks Brewing in Burnaby BC comes their latest release the “Summer Ale”. The beer pours a cloudy straw Yellow colour with a white head. The aroma consists of orange, orange peel, yeast, wheat and just an overall fruity finish. The flavour is of wheat, yeast, orange, orange peel and Mild hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.8% with an IBU of 20.  This will be a tasty patio beer this summer!

Commercial Description:  Crisp and thirst quenching with a distinct citrus aroma, this wheat ale gets a refreshing kick from sweet orange peel, lemon peel and grains of paradise. The balance of bright citrus, fruity hops, and spice make this lively brew perfect for any summer day. Perfect for poolside chilling or more intrepid adventures.

East of East Van Saison – Steamworks Brewing (Dageraad Brewing)

From Steamworks Brewing in Collaboration with Dageraad Brewing both located in Burnaby comes their “East of East Van” Saison.  The beer was brewed at Steamworks Brewing and bottled with Dageraad Brewings hand bottler.  It was then transferred to Dageraad Brewing to be bottle conditioned at Dageraad.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of pepper, lime and Belgian yeast.  The flavour is of pepper, lime, citrus peel, Belgian yeast and some malts in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 25.  This was a really enjoyable collaboration with lots of complexity.

Commercial Description: Steamworks has been busy collaborating with their fellow Burnaby based brewers at Dageraad Brewing. Aptly named the “East of East Van Bottle Conditioned Saison”, these two river city brewers have crafted a beer worth crossing Boundary Ave for. This exotic saison features black lime and white pepper, which gives it a spicy aroma, crisp flavor and dry finish. Steamworks brewmaster Julia Hanlon expands upon the release: “We wanted to celebrate our brewery’s Burnaby roots with our friends at Dageraad. The addition of black limes make for a really unique release and it’s our first Bottle Conditioned beer at Steamworks, who better to team up with, than Dageraad, who are experts at the art of bottle conditioning!”.

Hoppin’ Cretin IPA – Tofino Brewing Company

From Tofino Brewing out of Tofino on Vancouver Island comes their “Hoppin’ Cretin IPA”.  The beer pours an golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of floral hops up front with citrus, grapefruit peel and some caramel malts.  The flavour is of fruity citrus large on the front of the beer with some citrus peel, caramel malts and medium bitterness finishing things off.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.5%.  While I like my IPA’s to have huge bitterness this is still a very well made IPA and it is quite balanced.

Commercial Description: INDIA PALE ALE • GOLDEN COLOUR  LIGHT, CARAMEL MALT BODY • HEAVILY HOPPED WITH NOTES OF CITRUS, TROPICAL FRUIT & PINE • EXTREMELY DRY FINISH • LOBOTOMY

ALL NATURAL. UNFILTERED.

Valiant Belgian IPA – Dead Frog Brewing

Late Winter/Early Spring seasonal

Well Tony Dewald of Dead Frog Brewing in Aldergrove just wont relent on the new and improved lineup of seasonal bomber releases!  What better way to follow up a great hop bomb of and IPA than with a bigger IPA.  The newest release is called the “Valiant Belgian IPA”.  Like the last two bomber releases this beer does not resemble any other beer in the Dead Frog Lineup!  This is not a light, smooth lager but a strong, hopy beast of an ale!  The beer pours a cloudy orange/yellow colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of citrus, floral hops and a Belgian yeast.  The flavour is of strong pine hops, citrus, Belgian yeast and some citrus (orange) peel.  I think the citrus peel flavour adds to the overall bitterness of this beer.  The alcohol content of this beer is 9% and it has an IBU of 55.  This beer may not have the IBU of the Fearless IPA but by god it has the alcohol content to make up for it!  This is one good hop bomb of a Belgian Style IPA.

Commercial Description:  Our Valiant Belgian IPA is a celebration of the valiant brewing forefathers in Belgium who perfected the art of making great beer and inspire us to do the same. This hybrid unfiltered IPA is our most romantic brew yet; it’s the perfect marriage of a West Coast hop powerhouse and an elegant Belgian ale.

Ingredients: Water, malted barley, hops, yeast, wheat, invest sugar
Malts: 2 Row, Cara 8, White Wheat
Hops: Columbus, Centennial
