The Jungle Bird Tropical Dark Sour – Dandy Brewing Company

From the Dandy Brewing Company in Calgary Alberta comes their “The Jungle Bird Tropical Dark Sour”.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of big tropical fruits, tartness and some roasted malts.  The flavour is of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus, tartness, roasted malts, caramel and brown sugar.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  This was not your typical sour ale and takes its inspiration from Tiki cocktails from my understanding.  While I don’t drink cocktails I can say that this was really enjoyable.

Commercial Description:  An homage to the classic Tiki cocktail. This beer has notes of demerara sugar, bitter lime, tropical pineapple coming together for a refreshing sour that is like no other.

Commercial Description:  This dark, dry-hopped, kettle soured, lavender, hibiscus hybrid is one of the more intricate beers made here at Torchlight.

Ciel De Nuit Dark Sour – Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

From Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria BC comes the “Ciel De Nuit Dark Sour” a beer aged in French oak barrels.  The beer pours a deep red colour with an off white head.  The flavour is of dark fruits, oak and some mild sweetness but not to much more.  The flavour is of oak, dark fruits, sweetness, mild tartness, bitterness, resin and earth.  The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 30.  Spinnakers is taking a much different approach to sour beer as they are making very understated sour beers with other flavours that overtake the sourness.  Almost no alcohol shines through in the flavour and the beer is quite enjoyable.
