Battle of the Casks – Townhall Coquitlam – November 29th 2013

On Friday November 29th, 2013 Townhall Coquitlam held a “Battle of the Casks”.  Four great BC breweries were involved including Four Winds, Dead Frog, Cannery and Steamworks Brewing.  The casks were tapped around 5pm and the beer started flowing.  The beer was poured by the brewery staff and then served by the great servers at Townhall.

This was the very first Battle of the Casks that they have held so it started with a few hiccups but it ran well from then on.  Four Winds Brewing brought their IPA dry hopped with Simco hops.  Dead Frog Brewing brought out a Nub Brown ale with chocolate, espresso and strawberries.  Steamworks Brewing brought a cask of Stout with chocolate, chillies and coca.  The last cask was from Cannery Brewing and was their Amber Ale with honey and Amarillo hops.

All 4 beer were really tasty and everyone in the place was having a really good time.  There was a ton of great conversation with lots of great people.

All the beer was very popular and it was awesome to see that all 4 beer in the Battle of the casks were a different style of beer.  The fist cask to empty and thus win the Battle of the Casks was Cannery Brewing Amber Ale.  I quite enjoyed the Cannery Amber Ale but my choice of best beer was the Four Winds Brewing IPA.  All 4 were great though and I would have had more than one glass each if I did not have to head out after the competition.

Antidisestablishmentarianism Amber Ale – Dead Frog Brewery

From Aldergrove BC’s Dead Frog Brewery comes the “Antidisestablishmentarianism Amber Ale” a brew made as a Memorial to Colin Jack a local teacher and co-creater of Just Here For The Beer  and the Canada Cup of Beer.  Colin passed away suddenly on February 26th, 2011 at age 40.  Being a fan of local craft beer and Caribbean rum it was decided these would be the backbones of his memorial beer.  The ale pours an amber colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of fruits, spices and some Caribbean rum.  The flavour was of malts, tropical fruits, spices, Caribbean rum, oak and a nice mild hops bitterness.  The alcohol content of this beer comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 15.  I may not have ever met Colin Jack but from the sounds of it he would have loved this beer just as much as I do.  It seems like a ton of thought was put into bringing this beer to life and it shows!  Memorials like this are only made for people that make differences in peoples lives, be it spreading the good word of craft beer or bettering the children of the future (especially bettering the children of the future!).

$4 per bottle sold goes to the Colin Jack Scholarship Fund.

This fund was set to help deserving students achieve their post-secondary education goals.

Commercial Description:  A smooth amber ale enhanced with rum soaked oak.  This unfiltered, malt forward amber ale has a slightly sweet finish with a hint of fruit & spices from rum barrel twists soaked in Barbados rum.  Colin loved beer and Caribbean rum, so we thought it would be a good idea to combine the two in his first memorial brew.

Malts:  Black, Cara 30, Chocolate, Munich, Wheat
Hops: Perle, Willamette
Special Features: Rum barrel twists soaked in Barbados rum

A note from Colin’s family:  Colin was passionate about family, education and beer, with an emphasis on local craft beer.  His background is a fusion of Caribbean & Canadian cultural values.  He was able to immerse himself in the Canadian lifestyle where his brother, sister and mother were born and in the culture of Trinidad & Tobago where his father was born.  Thus a beer produced in Canada with a Caribbean flair is a wonderful tribute to Colin & his enthusiasm for local suds.

A Note From Me: I have so many fond memories of the Canada Cup of beer back when it was at UBC with great friends.  I am happy that I was able to take part in one of Colin’s labors of love!  I also have huge admiration for people who choose to teach children.  It can be a thankless job but without these people out world is hooped!  There is nothing more people want to do with their lives than make a difference and this is what Colin did!  Please raise your glass to Colin!  Cheers
