Second Annual Moustache & Beeard Challenge – Strange Fellows Brewing

On November 23rd 2016 Strange Fellows Brewing held their second annual Moustache & Beeard Challange between 7-9pm.

This event was a fundraiser for Movember and cost $15 to enter the competition.  This entry fee included one beer.  The tasting room was packed and there was a good turn out for the competition itself.  I was even talked into taking part in the event personally although my beard is nothing compared to some of these guys especially the ones in the Vancouver Facial Hair Club.   It is always good to see people supporting cancer research.

There were 4 Judges for the competition including a member of the Vancouver Facial Hair Club, Kim of Strange Fellows Brewing,  Leah of Vancouver Craft Beer Week and Nigel of Brassneck Brewery.  Judging was done on the quality of beard or moustache and the quality of answers to the judges questions.  Iain Hill (brewmaster) was the MC of the event. There was some great facial hair and the winners showed this.  There were three official categories and one unofficial one.  The three official ones were Best Beard, Best Moustache and the Golden Whisker Award for people in the Brewing industry.  The fourth was a joke one for most trashy beard or something of the like.

Here are the winners.

  • Golden Whisker Award – Azlan Graves (Powell Street Craft Brewery)
  • Best Beeard – Theo Buckinskas (Vancouver Facial Hair Club)
  • Best Moustache – Sean O’Reilly (Strange Fellows Brewing)
  • Biggest Dirtbag Award – Aaron MacInnis (Main Street Brewing)

This charity event was a blast and I look forward to next years edition!  I hope even more people show up to compete!

Steveston Beer Fest 2013 – October 5th 2013

On October 5th, 2013 O’hare’s Gastropub and Liquor Store held the first annual Steveston Beer Fest an event raising money for the Richmond Christmas Fund.  Tickets cost $40 and included all beer, one German Sausage on a bun and lots of other food samples.  There was also a 50/50 draw and lots of merchandise for sale.

Steveston may not seem like the most likely place for a beer festival being a small village in Richmond but a location like the Gulf of Georgia Cannery a National Historic Site built in 1894 turned out to be an amazing location!  It does not hurt that transit from Vancouver to Steveston is very easy taking the Canada line and then one of two buses.  The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a really interesting Museum that displays the history of fisheries in the area.  The layout of the museum was great for having beer booths and food booths spread out over the large 55,000 square foot area.

There were many breweries involved in the event mostly from British Columbia but also from Washington, Oregon, Ontario, Quebec and around the world.  Here is a partial List.

Enough with words for a second.  Here are the photos from the event.

The event was full of amazing beer and amazing people but then if you are into the craft beer scene you would come to expect this already.  I am a sucker for Craft Beer events and I am always happy to help raise money for a Charity so this event was the best of both worlds!  I would like to thank O’hare’s Gastropub for putting on this amazing event and I can not wait until next year to see what you have in store for us!

Beautiful Brewers Of British Columbia (2014 Calendar)

I am always a fan of a good fundraiser especially when the cause hits close to home.  This year 12 local BC breweries and the Photographer Stacey Aumonier got together and put together a calendar to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation.

The twelve breweries involved are Deep Cove, Howe Sound, Tofino, Coal Harbour, Central City (Red Racer), Moon Under Water, Hoyne, Parallel 49, R&B, Spinnakers, Vancouver Island and Storm Brewing.  This is a very tasteful nude calendar and a ton of fun!

A great example of what this calendar is about is the July photo.  Here you will find James and Heather of Storm Brewing in Vancouver in the hot tub…. I mean mash tun.

This calendar will be available at all 12 breweries as well as Legacy Liquor Store (Vancouver) and Cannery Cold Beer and Wine (Sidney).  The calendar will also be available elsewhere and I will update this post if I can find out where.  So go out and pick up a copy of the Calendar for you and all your friends and help Cancer Research while you are at it!  I can not wait to hang my copy on the wall and I look forward to a 2015 edition too!

Both Photos used with permission of the Photographer and were both sent to me by Stacey.  Please do not download these photos as the copy writes are owned by her.
