Calypso Pale Ale (Single Hop Series #2) – Persephone Brewing Company

Persephone Brewing out of Gibsons BC has started up a single hop series recently.  The second beer in this series is the “Calypso Pale Ale” a series where the beer recipe will only be altered at the hops level.  The beer pours an amber colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of earth, mild fruit and citrus.  The flavour is of earth, tea, citrus, pear, lemon, hops bitterness and a malty finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  After trying the Galaxy Pale Ale it is amazing at just how different this beer is seeing it is a very similar recipe with just the hops changed.  Once again this was a great beer that showcases what the Calypso hops can produce.

Galaxy Pale Ale (Single Hop Series #1) – Persephone Brewing Company

Persephone Brewing out of Gibsons BC has started up a single hop series recently.  The first beer in this series is the “Galaxy Pale Ale” a series where the beer recipe will only be altered at the hops level.  The beer pours an amber colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruit, malts and floral hops.  The flavour is of tropical fruit, citrus, earth and some hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  As single hop beers go this is a great beer that really shows off what to expect with Galaxy hops and how they can change a beers flavour.

Commercial Description:  Persephone’s Single Hop Series pays homage to the unique aroma and flavor character of select varieties of hops – the spices of beer – in a sessionable Pale Ale style.

Barley Wine – Persephone Brewing Company

From Persephone Brewing Company out of Gibsons BC comes their”Barley Wine” a 2014 Vintage ale and their first attempt at this style.  The beer pours a deep cloudy brown with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasty malts, rasins, dark fruit and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of dark fruits, rasins, sweetness, roasted malts, hops bitterness, and lots of alcohol warmth.  The alcohol content comes in at 11.9%.  Like most barley wines this beer needs some age still.  Very few breweries age theirs to make it more smooth due to lack of space.  If nothing else pick up a few bottles of this and age them for at least a year.  This will be great in a year!

Harvest IPA – Persephone Brewing Company

From Persephone Brewing Company out of Gibsons BC comes their “Harvest IPA” a beer that is wet hopped with their own hops gown on site.  These hops are only one year old and most hops do not really achieve the best oils until a few years in.  Persephone Brewing took a huge gamble with wet hopping this beer with their young hops.  The beer pours a deep amber colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of biscuit malts and floral/earthy hops.  The flavour is of earthy hops with a decent hops bitterness, resin, citrus, but the real star of the show is the caramel and biscuit malt backbone.  The alcohol content comes in at a very respectable 6.5%.  The real star of this beer are the malts but this is an amazing wet hopped beer and is a very welcome addition to the local landscape.  I have my bets that this beer will be even more amazing for the next few years as the hops plants mature.  If you can still find a bottle then do not hesitate as this is one awesome beer.

Commercial Description:  This light amber IPA is brewed with fresh cascade and centennial hops grown on Persephone’s farm. This beer has an aroma of orange and grapefruit, a subtle citrusy, grassy flavour with a light caramel malt background.

Double IPA – Persephone Brewing Company

limited Release

From Persephone Brewing Company out of Gibsons BC comes their “Double IPA” a very limited release brew.  The beer pours a very clear golden colour with a white head and some lacing.  The aroma consists of floral hops, citrus and malts.  There is a ton of hops bitterness to the taste with pine, citrus, tropical fruits, caramel and malts to finish it off.  This beer is very hopy but also very balanced.  The alcohol content comes in at 9%.  I have heard this brew being compared to some of the best IPA’s in the world.  I would not quite put it there but it is up in the top tier to be sure.
