Pacific Northwest Porter – Granville Island Brewing

From Granville Island Brewing out of Vancouver comes their new “Pacific Northwest Porter”.  The beer pours a very deep black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, smoke, caramel and earth.  The flavour is of smoke, ash, roasted malts, caramel and a big hit of bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 32.  Once a gain Kevin Emms has made a very tasty brew and should be picked up if you see it.  Granville Island Brewing is owned by Molson.

Winter Wit– Granville Island Brewing

From Granville Island Brewing out of Vancouver comes their new “Winter Wit”.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of coriander, spices, orange, wheat, yeast and floral hops.  The flavour is of orange, coriander, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus rind, wheat and yeast.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 18.  This is an interesting take on the Wit.  It is a bit winter ale and a bit wit.  If you like the sound of this you should really like this beer.  Granville Island Brewing is owned by Molson.

BC Beer Awards 2017 / Beer Festival – October 21th 2017

It is October again and that means it was time for the 8th Annul BC Beer Awards.  Once again the Beer Awards and festival were held at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  This years festival landed on October 21st, 2017.  The first 7 awards were held in a similar format with the festival happening at the same time as the awards with the announcements happening in the second half of the festival.  This year the awards were held in a VIP hour that took place before the main doors opened.

I have been attending this event for many years now and it is one of the must attend events on the yearly calendar.  I was lucky enough to be able to attend the awards portion of the event before the general public was let into the building.  To me the most important part of the entire experience is the actual awards and that is one thing that I am not a big fan of with this years changes.  luckily this was still an amazing event.  The BC Beer Awards continue to grow every year with this having beer from 97 breweries and a total entries of 879.  Last year for comparison was 83 breweries and 750 entries.  The event started at 4pm for VIP’s and then opened up to the masses at 5pm.  last call for the beer festival was at 9:45pm.

You can check out Pacific Beer Chats coverage of the awards here

For the last few years Stephen Quinn of CBC Radio was the host of the awards but with a bad back he was unable to do the honors.  This year Dan Burritt of CBC Radio took his place and did a wonderful job.  I still hope one day 100% of the breweries will take part in this event as you never really know the best beer in the province if not everyone takes part.  Lets get to the most important part, the winning beer!

Backcountry Brewing

This year had a few nice surprises with the winners.  With the Best in Show being Flagship IPA from Steamworks Brewing the tides have turned a little bit towards creativity and not just following style guidelines for the BC Beer Awards.  This year Boombox Brewing won CBC People’s Choice Award and Innovator of the Year went to Twin Sails Brewing.  Both are very experimental breweries and leading the charge with great experimental brews.  It was also amazing to see two rookie breweries win two huge awards.  Brewery of the Year went to Mount Arrowsmith Brewing from the island and Rookie of the Year went to Backcountry Brewing out of Squamish.

The media got to enter at 3pm for a small media tour.  Here are some photos from the media hour.  The media tour was lead by Paul Pyne of DrinkSmarter.ca a Certified Cicerone and a member of the craft beer community.

Here are some of my photos of the event once it started.  This year I took far less photos as I was busy recording audio for the Pacific Beer Chat episode.  Here are the photos that I did take.

This year was once again an amazing year with even better beer both being served and winning awards.  Here is to next years event!

So-Cal Style IPA – Granville Island Brewing

From Granville Island Brewing out of Vancouver comes their new “So-Cal Style IPA” the latest in their Small batch brews.  The beer pours an orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of tropical fruit, fruity, syrupy and floral hops.  The flavour is of tropical fruit, pineapple juice, fruit candies, sweetness, lemon, pine, resin and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.8% with an IBU of 80.  While I don’t think I would consider this a So-Cal style IPA it was enjoyable.  Granville Island Brewing is owned by Molson.

Commercial Description:  Like the state of California, our So-Cal Style IPA is big, bold and beautiful. Bright citrus and grapefruit notes dominate this audacious brew thanks to an epic dose of West Coast hops. Pairs well with fish tacos with a citrus salsa.

Brew North Strong (Abbotsford International Air Show) – Abbotsford

For the 2017 edition of the Abbotsford International Airshow they added a new attraction to the weekend.  For all three days running August 11 to 13th they held the Brew North Strong Craft Beer Festival.  The beer fest was held near the Static plane display on the far side of the Airshow grounds.

The beer fest was a bit of an extra cost on top of the Airshow but well worth it.  The breweries that came out to celebrate were Ravens Brewing, Hathi Brewing, Highway 97 Brewing, Chaos & Solace Brewing, Mt Begbie Brewing, Two Wolves Brewing, Cannery Brewing, Dead Frog Brewery, Granville Island Brewing, 4 Mile Brewing and Stanley Park Brewing.  The fenced off area was located on a nice grass field with seating at the front on the runway side.  You could either buy designated seating up front or just pay to go into the beer fest and get very similar seating and a beer fest thrown in at the basically the same price.

Being a big beer nerd there were not a ton of beers I had not had but there was still the odd one.  But the breweries still brought some really tasty stuff and made for an exciting time for new beer drinkers and seasoned craft fans alike. Shout out to 4 Mile Brewing for bringing some unique releases that I have not seen.  I could not believe the view of some of the airshow acts from the festival grounds.  Check out the videos below to see some of the acts.

F18 Super Hornet does a high speed flyby.

Impressive turning capabilities of F18

Entertaining staged scary flight.

But when you go to the Abbotsford International Airshow you really need to check out the planes.  This year saw a handful of American and Canadian military planes with some coast guard, police and private planes rounding out the lineup with one exception.  There was one really cool stealth fighter that came to the show and I think it came from Norway but I am not sure anymore.

This is definitely a must attend event.  Be it for the craft beer like me or even just for the planes.  Make sure to make it out next year to see for yourself.  I will leave you with this video.
