Brews Brothers (Vol 3) – Parallel 49 Brewing

Brews Brothers was born two years ago as a 12 case collaboration mixed pack.  The first two packs were collaborations within the province of British Columbia.  Volume One was a Blues inspired pack and year two was a Rock and Roll theme. This year things have changed as it is now a 4 bomber pack in Collaboration with American breweries.

This year the theme is Old School Rap and the entire West Coast of Canada and the USA has been involved.  It is almost like an Extended Cascadia colab.

This years Brews include from North to South:

49th State Brewing (Anchorage, AK) – Gettin’ It, a Northern Farmhouse Style Beer
Scuttlebutt Brewing Company (Everett, WA) – Baby Got Back, a Hoppy Hefeweizen
Gigantic Brewing Company (Portland, OR) – Blazing Arrow, a Tawny IPA
Green Flash Brewing (San Diego, CA) – What’s Golden, an “East Meets West” IPA

What’s Golden, an “East Meets West” IPA

This creation of Parallel 49 Brewing and Green Flash Brewing out of San Diego California pours an orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of mango, citrus, very fruity, caramel and a floral finish.  The flavour is of caramel, resin, citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit, pine and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.5%.  This is a really juicy beer and has everything you like from East Coast and West Coast Beers.

Blazing Arrow, a Tawny IPA

This creation of Parallel 49 Brewing and Gigantic Brewing out of Portland Oregon pours a cloudy copper colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of pineapple, tropical fruit, juicy fruits, caramel and floral hops.  The flavour is of pineapple, tropical fruit, melon, juicy, caramel, mild dank hops and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  I really enjoyed this beer and I would drink it again if I found it!

Baby Got Back, a Hoppy Hefeweizen

This creation of Parallel 49 Brewing and Scuttlebutt Brewing from Everett Washington pours a golden colour with a slightly white head.  The aroma consists of banana, bubblegum, citrus, wheat and floral hops.  The flavour is of banana, citrus, bubblegum, earth, herbal hops and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.5%.  This was a tasty beer but my least favourite beer of the 4 but mostly as I am not a fan of Hefeweizen’s as a rule.

Gettin’ It, a Northern Farmhouse Style Beer

This creation of Parallel 49 Brewing and 49th State Brewing from Anchorage Alaska pours a slightly cloudy golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of yeast, lemon, candied pears and grain.  The flavour is of bready malts, grain, yeast, lemon, pear and grassy hops.  The alcohol content comes in at 7%.  This is more of a sweet saison than a farmhouse ale but that does not change the fact that it is a well made ale.

I have tried all three Brews Brothers collaboration boxes and reviewed two now.  This one was just as good as the others and well worth picking up in the liquor stores now!

Hop and Vine New Menu Launch Dinner – November 30th, 2013

The Hop & Vine Taphouse in Burnaby is launching a brand new Local Sustainable menu.  On November 30th, 2013 a few Food Bloggers and I were invited to a Long table dinner to show off this new menu and pair their new food with great craft beer.  Their new mandate is to bring in local foods and make from scratch all of their sauces and salad dressings.  Their meat is BC or Alberta raised and is hormone and antibiotic free.  Vegetable portions of the meals will have a Summer and Winter variation so that only local vegetables can be used.

Well lets get to the main event the brand new Menu and why you need to check this bar out for the first time or reacquaint yourself.

First Course
Shiny Penny Belgian IPA – Townsite Brewing
Winter Salad – Seasonal greens tossed with wild mushrooms, roasted peppers, candied pecans and a honey Dijon dressing topped with grilled free run chicken breast.
Buttermilk Chicken Strips – Free run chicken tenders marinated in buttermilk, deep fried until crisp and served with curry ketchup.

The salad had some great flavour with a nice sweet tang from the salad dressing that paired well with the Belgian yeast found in this Belgian IPA.  The Buttermilk Chicken strips are to die for!  The hops bitterness paired really well with the curry ketchup dip for the chicken strips as spice and hops are always a good mix.

Course Two
Odin Brewing Company – Viking Gold Extra Pale Ale
Mini French Meat Pie – Beef and peas sauteed in a rich gravy, stuffed into a flaky pastry and served with garlic mash and a red wine demi-glace.
BBQ Pork Sandwich – Asian-style seared pork loin topped with pickled veg and a spiced mayo served on a toasted baguette.

Both of these creations went well with this nice mild pale ale.  The mini meat pie was amazing and finished off very well with the wine demi-glace.  The pulled pork sandwich was quite different for me with the sweeter Asian-style bbq sauce and pickled vegetables.  Not only did the citrus from the beer go nicely but I think I could even have this sandwich for dessert!  So tasty!

Course Three
Green Flash Brewing Company – Imperial IPA
Mini Pumphouse Burger – Housemade ground Alberta chuck patty char grilled and topped with bbq sauce, aged Canadian Cheddar, crisp bacon and fried onions on a fresh bun.
Poutine – Organic, hand-cut fries topped with housemade gravy, cheese curds, crisp bacon bits and caramelized balsamic onions.

Both offerings on this plate are filled with lots of flavour and as such can stand tall even beside a big bitter IPA.  This homemade patty is great and the addition of the fried onions, cheddar and bacon make it very tasty treat.  This is one of the best poutines I have had personally.  The fresh fries with a very well crafted gravy, bacon bits and amazing fried onions are a party in your mouth.  I look forward to my next meeting with this plate!

Course Four
Steamworks Brewing Company – Pale Ale
Italian Meat Lovers Flatbread – Housemade flatbread topped with prosciutto, capicolli, pepperoni, provolone, aged Canadian cheddar and Mozzarella.
Chipotle & Chopped Chicken Salad – Smoked bacon, grilled free run Chicken breast, crispy tortillas, aged Canadian cheddar, cucumbers and tomatoes tossed with an orange chipotle dressing.

I will admit that I was getting very full already at this point and was not able to enjoy much of either of these dishes.  The salad was very interesting and I always love a salad with tortillas.  The Flatbread paired well with the malty pale ale.  I found the flatbread a bit to salty for me but looking at the ingredients this was by design.

Course Five
Double Trouble Brewing Co. – Prison Break Breakout Pilsner
Deep Fried Lime Tempura Prawns – Black tiger prawns in a light lime zest scented tempura batter, deep fried and served with a sweet chili aioli.
Butter Chicken – An authentic Indian recipe made with traditional spices and free run chicken thighs and served with Naan bread over jasmine scented rice.

Full disclosure I do not east shrimp so I do not personally know what this tasted like but it was very well received.  This butter chicken is a treat.  I like all butter chicken but I far prefer a real authentic version with a good spice kick.  This is not a wimpy butter chicken and paired well with this fairly bitter pilsner.
