BC Beer Awards 2017 / Beer Festival – October 21th 2017

It is October again and that means it was time for the 8th Annul BC Beer Awards.  Once again the Beer Awards and festival were held at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  This years festival landed on October 21st, 2017.  The first 7 awards were held in a similar format with the festival happening at the same time as the awards with the announcements happening in the second half of the festival.  This year the awards were held in a VIP hour that took place before the main doors opened.

I have been attending this event for many years now and it is one of the must attend events on the yearly calendar.  I was lucky enough to be able to attend the awards portion of the event before the general public was let into the building.  To me the most important part of the entire experience is the actual awards and that is one thing that I am not a big fan of with this years changes.  luckily this was still an amazing event.  The BC Beer Awards continue to grow every year with this having beer from 97 breweries and a total entries of 879.  Last year for comparison was 83 breweries and 750 entries.  The event started at 4pm for VIP’s and then opened up to the masses at 5pm.  last call for the beer festival was at 9:45pm.

You can check out Pacific Beer Chats coverage of the awards here

For the last few years Stephen Quinn of CBC Radio was the host of the awards but with a bad back he was unable to do the honors.  This year Dan Burritt of CBC Radio took his place and did a wonderful job.  I still hope one day 100% of the breweries will take part in this event as you never really know the best beer in the province if not everyone takes part.  Lets get to the most important part, the winning beer!

Backcountry Brewing

This year had a few nice surprises with the winners.  With the Best in Show being Flagship IPA from Steamworks Brewing the tides have turned a little bit towards creativity and not just following style guidelines for the BC Beer Awards.  This year Boombox Brewing won CBC People’s Choice Award and Innovator of the Year went to Twin Sails Brewing.  Both are very experimental breweries and leading the charge with great experimental brews.  It was also amazing to see two rookie breweries win two huge awards.  Brewery of the Year went to Mount Arrowsmith Brewing from the island and Rookie of the Year went to Backcountry Brewing out of Squamish.

The media got to enter at 3pm for a small media tour.  Here are some photos from the media hour.  The media tour was lead by Paul Pyne of DrinkSmarter.ca a Certified Cicerone and a member of the craft beer community.

Here are some of my photos of the event once it started.  This year I took far less photos as I was busy recording audio for the Pacific Beer Chat episode.  Here are the photos that I did take.

This year was once again an amazing year with even better beer both being served and winning awards.  Here is to next years event!

That New Trapp – Hearthstone Brewery (Stillwater Artisanal)

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver in collaboration with Stillwater Artisanal out of Baltimore Maryland comes their “That New Trapp” a Funky Brett IPA labeled as a Hazy New England-Style Trappist Ale.  The beer pours a lightly cloudy orange with a white head.  The aroma consists of brett funk, stone fruit, tropical fruit and maybe a hint of floral hops.  The flavour is of brett funk, tropical fruit, stone fruit, lemon, some biscuit and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 35.  Been a fan of Stillwater for some time and have been a big fan of Hearthstone Brewery since they opened and this beer is an amazing marriage of both breweries.  Great flavours really do combine with this brew to make a North East IPA even if it is not as murky as it should be for the style.

Commercial Description:  A funky brett IPA with an irresponsible amount of Citra, Mosaic & Amarillo hops fermented with a blend of reckless yeast strains, Brett B and Conan.  A collaboration beer from Hearthstone and Stillwater Artisanal.

Slackline Summer Ale – Hearthstone Brewery

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Slackline Summer Ale”.  The beer pours an orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of pienapple and mango with juniper and some sweetness.  The flavour is of pineapple, mango, juniper, citrus rind, some bitterness and a mild funk finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.7% with an IBU of 20.  This new release is quite enjoyable.  This should be your beer you say goodbye to summer with.  Luckily for everyone there is a bunch of Summer left to enjoy this beer!

Commercial Description:  A moderately hopped light refreshing summer ale with delicate juniper spice notes, fermented with Sach Trois yeast providing a gentle yet complex bouquet.

Rizzla Rice Lager – Hearthstone Brewery

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Rizzla Rice Lager”.  This beer is certified Gluten Friendly by both White Labs and Siebel Institute by having both labs test every batch of the beer to a threshold of 10 parts per million of gluten.  The beer pours a light straw yellow colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of mild bready malts, almost caramel, rice, citrus and a crisp finish.  The flavour is of bready and grainy malts, rice, mild caramel, citrus, sweetness, mild grassy hops and a crisp low bitterness finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.5% with an IBU of 18.  If you are looking for a nice crisp clean lager this could be a good choice for sure.  If you are looking for a gluten friendly beer this is definitely a good choice for you!

Commercial Description:  Rizla Rice Lager is an easy drinking Asian style lager. A great session beer for watching sports, weather, and people. Brewed using rice properly, for flavour rather than filler, bittered with classic northern brewer hops to balance the rice sweetness. Makes a great house lager.  Gluten reduced to less than 10 parts per million & it tastes great!  Every batch is tested twice by two labs.  All the flavour not the gluten!

Wyld Raspberry Berliner Weisse – Hearthstone Brewery

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Wyld Raspberry Berliner Weisse”. The beer pours a reddish pink colour with a small white head.  The aroma is of Raspberry, sweetness but not to much else.  The flavour is of raspberry, tartness with some undertones of sweetness with a mild malt note.  The alcohol content comes in at 3.2% with an IBU of 00.  You can not go wrong with a nice session sour ale and this one will not disappoint.

Commercial Description:  We brew this the way they did back in the day, using a 100% wild lactobacillus bacteria to sour the beer, then we bring it back into the kettle and add 200lbs of real, whole local raspberries resulting in a pink, tart and refreshing summer beer.
