From Strange Fellows Brewing Company in East Vancouver comes their “Bayard Farmhouse Saison”. Check out the tasting panel I was part of for this beer at Whats Brewing magazine. The beer pours a golden colour with a white head with some retention. The aroma consists of citrus, orange, pepper and a citrus find in the finish. The flavour is of lots of citrus and tons of orange rind, pepper, herbal notes, crackery malts and a grassy and mild bitter finish. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 25. I enjoyed this beer but I found the citrus rind a little strong for my liking as it took on a bit of an odd bitterness.
Commercial Description: He’s back and better than ever! – Hero of many a legend, Bayard the horse perpetually outwits any attempt to control him & fearlessly blazes his own path. He symbolizes the free spirit not to be tamed. Wild by nature, this Saison is the happenstance of unique yeasts & bottle-conditioning, & is just the thing for celebrating the things we cannot control.
Food pairing as per brewery: Asian & Middle-Eastern cuisine, spicy, funky & creamy cheeses
From Fernie BC’s Fernie Brewing comes the “The Eldorado Single Hop IPA” a beer part of their IPA series. The beer pours an orange colour with a white head. The aroma consists of tropical fruit, lemongrass, floral hops and caramel. The flavour is of tropical fruits, lemongrass, herbal notes, caramel, leafy, grassy and medium bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6.8% with an IBU of 75 – 80. I like a good single hop IPA and this one has enough flavour to not be one dimensional and be quite refreshing!
Commercial Description: Eldorado Hop is the focus of this single hop IPA. In addition to the stone fruit flavours of the Eldorado Hop, we have added distinctive Lemongrass, to provide a little extra citrus zing.
From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Magodes White IPA”. The beer poured a golden colour with a white head. The aroma consists of lemon, wheat and floral hops. The flavour is of resin, lemon, citrus rind, wheat, herbal notes and hops bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 150. This beer isn’t big on the wheat and is closer to an IPA than a White IPA but I prefer it that way anyways. This beer wont disappoint!
Commercial Description: The Magodes White IPA is a kick you in the teeth, take no prisoners, flavour filled hop bomb. Hearthstone pulled out all the stops, acquiring the legendary “Conan” yeast strain from Vermont which imparts light citrus and peachy goodness. Next they kick it up with a healthy dose of HOP HASH, imparting massive notes of juicy fruit, sliced mango and kittens! Enjoy friend!
From Twin Sails Brewing in Port Moody comes their “Sticke Altbier” a variation on a Dusseldorf Altbier. The beer pours a deep reddish colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of toffee, malts, fruit, herbal, spices and sweetness. The flavour is of and spices. The alcohol content comes in at 5.7% with an IBU of 40. I will admit I do not know this style of beer well but I did enjoy the beer none the less. Is it on point for the style I am not sure but I would surly drink more of it.
Commercial Description: A stronger, hoppier variation of the traditional Dusseldorf Altbier. Twin Sails Sticke Alt pours a deep copper colour and is full of spice and herbal characters thanks to a generous helping of Noble hops. The German ale yeast provides a pleasant fruitiness that balances out the bitterness. After fermentation is complete, the brew is lagered for several weeks creating an ale that is big and complex with a smooth finish.
