Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale 2014 – Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

Limited Winter Release

From Sierra Nevada Brewing Company out of Chico California comes their seasonal the “Bigfoot Barleywine Style Ale”.  This bottle is of the 2014 Vintage being bottled on 12/10/13.  This big ale pours a deep copper with a light brownish head.  The aroma consists of big malts, some floral hops and a hint of fruits.  The flavour is of huge malts, dark fruits, pine and hops bitterness.  This beer is obviously young as the alcohol is still quite hot (quite noticeable).  The alcohol content comes in at 9.6% and I would assume the IBU is fairly high as well.  This is a very good Barleywine if you are a fan of the style but it could really use some aging to bring up the malts while bringing down the alcohol burn.

Commercial Description:  Bigfoot is a beast of a beer, brimming with bold flavors of bittersweet malt and heaps of aggressive whole-cone Pacific Northwest hops. First introduced in the winter of 1983, Bigfoot is a cult-classic beer brewed in the barleywine style, meaning a strong, robust, bruiser of a beer with the refined intensity of a wine. Bigfoot is prized by beer collectors for its supreme cellarability. Under the proper conditions, it can age like a fine wine, developing new flavors and character as it matures in the bottle. Each new release or “expedition” is vintage dated. Collect your own and see the flavors develop and progress.

Year One Red Wheat Wine – The Moon Under Water Pub & Brewery

Limited Release

From The Moon Under Water Pub & Brewery out of Victoria comes their “Year One Red Wheat Wine”.  This is The Moon Under Water’s first anniversary since being taken over by the new owners and this beer was brewed in celebration.  This brew pours a cloudy Orangey/Brown colour with a white head.  The aroma consists wheat, red wine, sweet grapes and lots of birch.  The flavour is of hops up front with red wine, wheat, yeast, birch, huge malts and maybe a hint of something like licorice.  This is a very complex beer with an alcohol warming without showing up in the flavour.  The alcohol content comes in at 11.5%.  My bottle is number 327 but it does not specify how many were made.  Although not the best wheat wine that I have ever had it was still a very tasty brew and well worth the purchase!  I am still fairly new to this style of beer but I have not been let down yet.  Keep up the great work Moon Under Water and happy Anniversary!

Commercial Description:  Brewmaster Clay has created this special brew to be shared, this strong red wheat wine was hopped throughout with Citra and then fermented dry with 3 yeast strains on yellow birch.
