Jolly Hopper Imperial IPA – Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub

From Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria BC comes the “Jolly Hopper Imperial IPA”.  The beer pours a deep amber with a tan head.  The aroma consists of caramel, fruity almost banana, lemon, floral hops and some sweetness.  The flavour is of caramel, toffee, fruity, citrus rind, resin, pith, hops bitterness and a grassy finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 100.  The 100 IBU and the alcohol does not really come out in the flavour as bitterness but this is an interesting flavour anyways.   I would say this almost seems like and English IPA.

Commercial Description:  Ahoy matey!  While the Jolly Roger is flown to identify that pirates are about to attack, our Jolly Hopper signifies an imminent attack on your tastebuds.  Featuring a moutherload of experimental hops, this beauty is not for the faint of palate.  Surrender or walk the plank!

Puff (Imperial IPA) – Sixpoint Brewery

From Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn New York comes their “Puff” an Imperial IPA.  The beer pours a very hazy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of orange, lemon, bready malts and a hint of malts.  The flavour is of orange, lemon, tropical fruits , ginger, resin, dank, pine, earthiness and lots of hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 9.8% with an IBU of 108.  Being a huge fan of big IPA’s I have to say I am super excited to find this in liquor stores in British Columbia now!  This stuff is the serious real deal.

Commercial Description:  Imagine puffing away on hops for days, then just chillin’ as the party starts winding down.  But wait, a final burst of energy; one last dose in a tank of dry hops. A special hop bouquet for the afterparty.  If you love Resin, try tasting it straight from the tanks. That’s PUFF – a hazy, unfiltered pour with an extra dose of dry hops… a new blend devised just for Puff.  We decided to capture our own puffy, cloudy brew in a limited release can. First puff says it all – this ish is Keller. Breathe deep and put your head in the clouds… it’s Mad Science.  This cloudy, unfiltered brew is meant to be drank super fresh. Don’t wait to Puff – this beer is code dated for consumption within 100 days. Puff, puff…

Subversion Imperial IPA – Category 12 Brewing

From Victoria’s Category 12 Brewing comes their “Subversion Imperial IPA”.  The beer pours a golden orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of citrus, tropical fruits, floral hops and caramel malts.  The flavour is of citrus, tropical fruits, bready malts, resin, pine, sweetness and a whole lot of bitterness.  The beer has an alcohol content of 8.7% with an IBU of 85.  This is a really good Double IPA and one of the best in BC right now in my opinion.

Commercial Description:  A lot can happen under the cover of night. Stealth – but not still – covert operations are taking place. Previous loyalties are being abandoned in favour of new traditions. If you pay attention, you won’t be left behind.  Subversion is a big, bold, west coast Imperial IPA. The body is medium-full, so its hop character is truly showcased. This beer will flip you on your head!

Welcome to the lab.
