Barrel Aged Sparkling Wit – Dogwood Brewing

From Dogwood Brewing in South Vancouver comes their brand new “Barrel Aged Sparkling Wit” a beer aged in Pinot Noir barrels.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of wheat, yeast, lemon, wine, vanilla and some mild oak.  The flavour is of Wine but more of a white wine than a Pinot Noir, vanilla, lemon, citrus, yeast, bubblegum, mild oak flavour and a sweet although dry finish with some tannins.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  This is one of the most complex beers that I have enjoyed from Dogwood Brewing.  Head over to the brewery to give it a try as this will only be available at the tasting room and select taprooms around town.

Commercial Description:  This Organic Belgian Wit was brewed with Coriander and Black pepper, then aged for 3 months in Organic French White Oak Pinot Noir Barrels. Delicate spicy esters create the perfect base for layer after layer of Flavour that Evolves as your glass warms, creating a thoughtfully refreshing drinking experience. Bright Lemon plays counterpoint to the deeper flavour of vanilla and oak imparted by the young barrels which; like a good pinot noir, pairs well with all types of food. Made with all Organic Local B.C ingredients, this creamy Wit is beautifully rounded in its complexity and finishes Dry with a hint of tannin. We’re very proud of this limited release and sincerely hope you enjoy.

Commander Imperial Stout 2017 – Dead Frog Brewery

From Dead Frog Brewery in Aldergrove comes their 2017 vintage of the “Commander Imperial Stout”.  The beer pours a deep opaque black colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, chocolate, toffee, caramel, earth and a sweet finish.  The flavour is of roasted malts, milk chocolate, toffee, caramel, mild coffee, ash, earth, very mild oak, alcohol and bitterness in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 10.5% with an IBU of 60.  I wish the beer had been aged in a barrel and not just on oak for 60 days as that would have taken this really tasty Imperial Stout to the next level.  But there is no doubt this is a great vintage of this beer.

FOOD PAIRINGS AS PER BREWERY:  ROAST BEAST WITH THICK GRAVY, CHOCOLATE CAKE AND ICE CREAM

Commercial Description: A DARK ROASTED STOUT FEATURING A DEEP, LAYED MALT PROFILE WITH FLAVOURS OF WHITE OAK AND WHISKEY.  AGED FOR 60 DAYS BEFORE BOTTLING.

From Powell Street Craft Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “Whiskey Barrel Aged Porter”. The beer pours a deep black colour with red tinges when held up to the light and a small brown head that fades quickly. The aroma consists of roasted malts, dark fruits, cherry, sweet vanilla, some chocolate and whiskey. The flavour is of chocolate, cherry, dark fruits, brown sugar, roasted malts, vanilla, whiskey and some oak.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 27.  I would have to say this is one great barrel aged porter and I hope it becomes an annual release!

Commercial Description:  We’ve aged a robust porter for six months in American whiskey barrels.  Notes of cherry and vanilla enhance the subtle dark fruit and coffee flavours of this limited edition beer.

Black Saison – Four Winds Brewing Company

Limited Brew

From the new Four Winds Brewing Company in Delta BC comes their very limited “Black Saison” a beer only available at the brewery.  The beer pours a black/brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of toasty malts, pepper, yeast, fruits, oaky and some sourness from lactic acid.  The flavour of this brew was of roasted malts, dark fruits, pepper, yeast, mild oak and a mild sourness.  This beer was a really interesting creation being aged on Hungarian oak with Lactic acid to sour the beer.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 25.  This beer was ridiculously good saison and Four Winds Brewing will not relent on their amazing releases.
