Strong Patrick – Beau’s All Natural Brewing

From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario comes their “Strong Patrick” an Irish-style Red Ale.  The beer pours a deep copper colour with a beige head.  The aroma consists of mild roasted malts, caramel, hint of chocolate and sweetness.  The flavour is of chocolate, caramel, earth, mild roasted malts, hint of oak and whiskey and sweetness.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.7% with an IBU of 24.  Not all Irish-style Red Ales are made the same but this one is definitely a really enjoyable sipper.

Commercial Description:  Strong Patrick is a bold rendition of an Irish-style red ale. Brewed stronger than most, it is luscious and malty, with toasty caramel and coffee. A portion of the ale has been aged in Jameson® Irish Whiskey casks, then reintroduced to add a rich accent of wood and warmth to this year’s blend.

Food Pairing as per brewery:  Traditional style lamb stew, shepherd’s pie, firm goat cheese, warm corned beef with steamed root vegetables, gingerbread with applesauce, shortbread.

Murder Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter – Powell Brewery

From Powell Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “Murder” a Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter aged for 24 months in American oak.  This was a single barrel release.  The beer pours a very deep brown with a brown head.  The aroma consists of vanilla, bourbon, oak, milk chocolate, caramel, creamy and sweetness.  The flavour is of vanilla, caramel, chocolate, bourbon, oak, mild roasted malts, dark fruits, sweetness but with a dry finish and some alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at 11.2%.  I am not sure if it needed 24 months but it sure didn’t hurt this one at all.  I really enjoyed this porter.

Commercial Description:  Murder is a special version of their Dive Bomb porter that has been aged for 24 months in American oak bourbon barrels. The end result came out at a massive 11.2%.  Murder will be available at the brewery only on Wednesday December 13, 2017 and there will only be 28 cases available.

Muy Bonita Double Brown Ale – Funky Buddha Brewery

From Oakland Park Florida’s Funky Buddha Brewery comes their “Muy Bonita Double Brown Ale” a beer with apple, cinnamon and vanilla.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of apple, cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, coffee, chocolate and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, chocolate, coffee, apple, mild roasted malts with some bitterness and alcohol in the finish.  The beer came in at 8.5% with an IBU of 35.  This beer is desert in a bottle and well worth picking up if you find yourself in Florida or anywhere their beer is sold.  Funky Buddha Brewery is now owned by Constellation Brands.

Commercial Description:  The big sister to our Bonita Applebum Apple Pie Brown, Muy Bonita is a bigger, badder ‘bum. This double brown ale flaunts a bodacious body and a stunning combination of real cinnamon, vanilla, and apples. So thick, she’s like a hip hop song.

Double Secret Probation Doppelsticke Altbier – Bomber Brewing (Coast Mountain Brewing)

For the third anniversary of Bomber Brewing in Vancouver in collaboration with Coast Mountain Brewing out of whistler comes the “Double Secret Probation Doppelsticke Altbier”.  The beer pours a deep copper brown with a tan head.  The aroma consists of roasty malts, caramel, sweetness and a floral and grassy finish.  The flavour is of mild roasted malts, caramel, toffee, nuts, chocolate, brown sugar, sweetness, earth and a mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 8.6% with an IBU of 39.  This is a tasty collaboration from both of these breweries and well worth checking out!  I know I look forward to having more.

Commercial Description:  When head brewers Blair Calibaba (Bomber) and Kevin Winter (Coast Mountain) first met, they immediately became fast friends and began plans for a collaboration brew. The result of that planning is this special version of a Düsseldorf Altbier that is higher in alcohol than the traditional German style with a much hoppier aroma due to the use of dry-hopping. ‘Doppelsticke’ means ‘double secret’ in German, hence the nod to the Delta House brothers and Dean Wormer’s infamous crackdown. In the words of John ‘Bluto’ Blutarsky, “My advice to you is to start drinking  heavily.”
