From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario comes their “Cabalier Blue” Blueberry IPA. The beer pours very red with some floaties and a light reddish head. The aroma consists of Blueberries, herbal and grassy hops and some grain. The flavour is of blueberries, mild tropical fruits, some bready malts, herbal and grassy hops with some hops bitterness in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 50. Leave it to Beau’s All Natural Brewing to come up with a really interesting blend of flavours!
Commercial Description: Built on the foundation of a generously hopped I.P.A., Cavalier Bleu blends the citrusy aromas of organic New Zealand hop varieties with the fruity flavours found in American Azacca and German Mandarina Bavaria hops. Topping it off is an infusion of organic blueberry juice made from wild Québec blueberries.
Food pairing as per brewery: Venison steak with a blueberry reduction, blueberry cheesecake, beemster cheese.
From Red Collar Brewing in Kamloops in the Okanagan comes their “IPA” a beer in their classic series. The beer pours a copper colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of caramel, earth, floral and herbal hops. The flavour is of caramel and biscuit up front with some earthiness, sweetness, mild tropical hops notes and a mild bitterness. There is no doubt this is an English IPA. The alcohol content comes in at 6.25% with an IBU of 78. I am surprised that the IBU is that high as it really does not come through in the flavour but more like an IBU of 40-50. With that being said this beer has all the makings of a really good English IPA and would probably even be quite palatable to non IPA drinkers.
Commercial Description: A traditional English style IPA using primarily Australian hops. Red Collar IPA is brewed with Kamloops water, Canadian malt, English ale yeast, and Galaxy and Ella hops. Unpasturized, unfiltered and naturally carbonated.
From the brand new Yellow Dog Brewing Company in Port Moody BC comes their Play Dead IPA. The beer pours a mildly cloudy golden colour with a white head. The aroma is malty with citrus and floral hops but seems to be fairly light. The flavour is of caramel malts, citrus, mild tropical fruits, some pine and resin and a medium bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 7%. This is a very good IPA and it is nice to see the Suburban breweries showing East Van what an IPA should taste like!
