From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Mr Fungi Chaga Black Lager” a beer with Chaga Mushrooms. The beer pours a chestnut brown with a brown head. The aroma consists of earth, chocolate, mild roasted malts and biscuit malts. The flavour is of mild roasted malts, biscuit malts, chocolate, mild coffee, nuts and some earth. The alcohol content comes in at 4% with an IBU of 10. This is a really fun and tasty dark lager and comes in at a very sessionable ABV! Don’t let the mushroom scare you if you don’t like them as it does not taste like mushrooms.

From Squamish BC’s Howe Sound Brewing comes “Mexican Chiapas Cold Pressed Coffee Ale”. The beer pours a deep red amber colour with an off white head. The aroma consists of roasted and toasted malts, coffee, nuts and caramel. The flavour is of roasted coffee, toasted malts, caramel, chocolate, earth, nuts, hint of fruits and some mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 22. This would be a terrible beer to drink before bed with all of the caffeine but this stuff is seriously tasty!
Commercial Description: This smooth amber ale is conditioned with cold brewed coffee to give a bold aroma and flavour of fresh coffee with roasted, earthy, caramel and nutty notes.
Some times you get a chance to try out some very interesting and rare beers and this is one of those. From De Struise Brouwers in Belgium comes their “C-DOS (Cuvée Delphine On Steroids aka Pablo Eiscobar” a Double Eisbocked version of Cuvée Delphine. This version was brewed in 2010 and aged for 5 years in Arran Lochranza barrels. The beer pours a very deep brown colour with no head or carbonation and some sediment. The aroma consists of bourbon, chocolate, treacle, licorice, dark fruit, oak and lots of booze. The flavour is alcohol up front and lots of it with bourbon, oak, chocolate, treacle, licorice, dark fruits, some nuts, peat and cherries. The alcohol content comes in at an insane 41% and is very very thick! This beer drinks like a bourbon but this is no surprise as the beer comes in at the same alcohol content as a bourbon. If you do not like spirits then this beer is a total miss for you but if you do and you find a bottle then it is something you need to try. But this will cost you a serious pretty penny.

From Nanaimo’s Wolf Brewing comes their limited release “Jinglepot Stout (Chocolate Pecan Milk Stout)”. The beer pours a opaque brown to black colour with a brown head. The aroma consists of chocolate milk, sweetness, pecan, caramel and vanilla. The flavour is of roasted malts, chocolate, lactose, pecans, earth and a mild Irish Whiskey finish. The alcohol content comes in at 4.7%. This is a really good beer and I hope they make it again! I know that the beer was quite difficult to make and would be made differently if done again though after talking to the head brewer.
From the brand new brewery Foamers’ Folly Brewing in PItt Meadows comes their “Bandit Brown Ale”. The beer pours a deep brown colour with a tan head. The aroma consists of roasty malts, nutty, caramel and a semi sweet finish. The flavour is of lots of roasty malts, nuts, caramel, some toffee maybe, sweetness and a little earth in the finish. The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 23. Not every beer is the most exciting beer you have ever had and they don’t need to be. This one does a great job of being very drinkable and would be good any day.
