Black Pils – Hearthstone Brewery

From Hearthstone Brewery in North Vancouver comes their “Black Pils”.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, coffee and some floral hops.  The flavour is of roasted malts, coffee, earth and some pilsner malts with herbal hops and some bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 23.  This is hardly a pilsner in the regular sense but that makes it far more interesting to me.

Commercial Description:  Our dark twist on a classic Czech style Pilsner.  A dark black beer with an authentic Saaz forward hop character creating a nice bite and dark malts add subtle roasty notes.

Cranberry Ginger Radler – Mission Springs Brewing

From Mission BC’s Mission Springs Brewing comes their “Cranberry Ginger Radler” a mix of their Trailblazer Pilsner.  This is their winter seasonal radler.  The radler pours a reddish colour with a reddish white head.  The aroma consists of cranberries, grape juice, ginger and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of cranberries, sugar, grapes, ginger, hints of pilsner malts and really an overall sweetness.  This is a very sweet beer but not sickeningly as it is basically as sweet as cranberry cocktail.   The alcohol content comes in at 3%.  I enjoyed this so much I picked up at six pack witch is a size that I almost never pick up!

Commercial Desctiption:  Our shandy with a twist!  Fresh cranberry and organic ginger makes this beer undeniably refreshing.

Craft Lager – Parallel 49 Brewing (Dec 11, 2014)

Beer Advent Calendar 2014

From Parallel 49 Brewing out of East Vancouver comes the “Craft Lager” a beer that would probably not be reviewed without being in the Mystery Gift Holiday Countdown.  Parallel 49 Brewing always excites with its crazy style bending beers but this is not one of those.  This is a very basic lager which is not to say it is bad as it isn’t but it is just to boring to get excited about unless you are a lager fan.  The Craft Lager pours a straw yellow colour with a white head.  The aroma is of pilsner malts, mild citrus and more mild grassy notes.  The flavour is of pilsner malts, sweet citrus and a grassy hops finish.  There really isn’t much to this beer as it is really light.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% and an IBU of 18.  If you like standard lagers then you will love this beer as it is better than macro beer for sure but I wont be running out to get anymore for sure.

Commercial Description:  Clean, crisp and refreshing. A pale lager brewed with all malted barley and local Sterling hops grown at Satori Cedar Ranch in Chilliwack, BC. Fermented cool using a traditional German lager yeast.

Lemon Ginger Radler – Mission Springs Brewing

From Mission BC’s Mission Springs Brewing comes their “Lemon Ginger Radler” a mix of their Trailblazer Pilsner, California Lemons and an organic ginger root infusion.  The Radler pours a very light cloudy yellow colour with a small white head.  The aroma is dominated by lemons, ginger and an overall sweetness that almost reminds me of a craft pop.  The flavour is of lemonade, ginger, candied ginger a hint of Pilsner malts and a very mild crisp bite.  The alcohol content comes in at 3% with an IBU of 17.  I am a huge fan of radlers and this being a non grapefruit radler makes it event better as it is different!  If you can find a six pack of this beer but three of them!

Commercial Description: This is a light and delicious drink based on our famous Trailblazer Pilsner recipe blended with California lemons and organic ginger root infusion.  At 3% alcohol and with a very refreshing lemon finish and light ginger zing, this beverage is perfect summer refreshment and great over ice.

Lighthouse Brewing Co – Rhubie Rhubarb Ale

The Lighthouse Brewing Company of Victoria, BC has produced the Rhubie Rhubarb Ale. Brewed with Pilsner Malt, flaked wheat, hops (unspecified), Belgian Wheat Ale Yeast and organic Fraser Valley rhubarb this is meant to be a refreshing summer beer.

It has the look of a Pilsner, clear and straw yellow with a loose, white head. This just screams refreshing summer drink. The carbonation flows up beautifully, reinforcing the summery feel.

The malt aromas come through clear but light, giving it a Pilsner scent with some hints of wheat beer. Just a hint of sweetness on the nose and a bit of Belgian funkiness and just a hint of rhubarb at the end.

The flavours are light as a cloud and balanced beautifully. The rhubarb, Pilsner Malt and Belgian yeast all come to the fore ba using a play on tart, sweet and funky. The slight hops bitterness backs up the rhubarb and lets the tartness shine through a bit. The creamy mouthfeel reminds me of really good ice cream with a light tickle of champagne-fine carbonation on the back of the tongue.

This is a great, light summer beer that should be enjoyed on a sunny patio with a cobbler.
