Barrel Aged Sparkling Wit – Dogwood Brewing

From Dogwood Brewing in South Vancouver comes their brand new “Barrel Aged Sparkling Wit” a beer aged in Pinot Noir barrels.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with an off white head.  The aroma consists of wheat, yeast, lemon, wine, vanilla and some mild oak.  The flavour is of Wine but more of a white wine than a Pinot Noir, vanilla, lemon, citrus, yeast, bubblegum, mild oak flavour and a sweet although dry finish with some tannins.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  This is one of the most complex beers that I have enjoyed from Dogwood Brewing.  Head over to the brewery to give it a try as this will only be available at the tasting room and select taprooms around town.

Commercial Description:  This Organic Belgian Wit was brewed with Coriander and Black pepper, then aged for 3 months in Organic French White Oak Pinot Noir Barrels. Delicate spicy esters create the perfect base for layer after layer of Flavour that Evolves as your glass warms, creating a thoughtfully refreshing drinking experience. Bright Lemon plays counterpoint to the deeper flavour of vanilla and oak imparted by the young barrels which; like a good pinot noir, pairs well with all types of food. Made with all Organic Local B.C ingredients, this creamy Wit is beautifully rounded in its complexity and finishes Dry with a hint of tannin. We’re very proud of this limited release and sincerely hope you enjoy.

Barrel Aged Maple Porter – Fernie Brewing

From Fernie BC’s Fernie Brewing comes the “Barrel Aged Maple Porter”.  This beer was aged for 12 months in Pinot Noir Barrels.  The beer pours a very deep brown with a brown head.  The aroma consists of red wine, chocolate, earth, roasted malts, caramel and maple.  The flavour is of red wine, chocolate, caramel, toffee, maple, roasted malts and ash.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.4% with an IBU of 35.  I was really happy to find this beer at a local liquor store in Vancouver as it is really complex and tasty.

Commercial Description:  Our Award-Winning Maple flavored Porter. Aged for one year in oak barrels which previously held Pinot Noir from Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery. Expect strong notes of berries and dried fruit, combined with our dark, robust Porter.

Pinot Noir Raspberry Blonde – Tin Whistle Brewing

From Penticton BC’s Tin Whistle Brewing comes their “Pinot Noir Raspberry Blonde” a beer barrel aged in Pinot Noir barrels.  The beer pours an orange colour with a very small head.  The aroma consists of raspberries, fruit, wine and a hint of oak from barrels.  The flavour is of raspberries, cherry, mild tart, pinot noir, oak, mild grains and tannins.  This beer actually reminds me a little of a Kriek although its not a cherry beer.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  This was a quite tasty take on their Blonde ale and makes sense it won a Gold for fruit beers in the BC Beer Awards in 2016.

Killer Bee Porter (Barrel Aged) – Tin Whistle Brewing

From Tin Whistle Brewing in Penticton comes their “Killer Bee Porter” aged in a  Pinot Noir Barrel for 7 months.  This Pinot Noir Barrel came from the  wine cellar of Joseph Nagy the father of Michael Nagy (of Tin Whistle).  When he was moved out of his house due to health reasons the barrel was emptied of wine and filled with the beer.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a red tinge and a brown head.  The aroma consists of honey, wine, oak, caramel and chocolate.  The flavour is of honey, oak, red wine, tannins, chocolate, mild roasted malts, some acidity, and coffee notes.  I like this beer in its normal state but the barrel aging has added a nice complexity and acidity that it does not have normally.

This beer was a very small production and a tribute to Joseph Nagy.  Only 24 bottles were made as well as 5 kegs.  There is currently at the time of writing only 20L left at the brewery.  I feel very privileged to be one of only 24 people with bottles of this beer.  The barrel is made of Hungarian Oak and Joseph Nagy is of Hungarian Decent.  The heart breaking part of this beer is that Joseph Nagy is unable to even take a sip of this beer due to the medication that he is on.

“What began as an experiment turned out to be a  great beer to honor a great father.” Michael Nagy

Commercial Description:  Dark and rich.  Tastes of chocolate and coffee.  The flavour and aroma of dark honey creates a silky smooth finish.  Silver medal winner at Calgary International Beer Fest.
