Tropical Tart Ale – Steamworks Brewing


From Steamworks Brewing in Burnaby BC comes their latest release the “Tropical Tart Ale”.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of passion fruit, pomegranate and an overall fruit juice base with sweetness and a hint of tartness.  The flavour is of tartness up front but not overbearing, passion fruit, pomegranate and an overall tropical note, mineral notes but not overly sweet.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.9% with an IBU of 15.  This is going to be a very popular summer beer and I hope it hangs out all summer!

Commercial Description:  Our new tropical tart ale is a true delight for the senses, pouring a beautiful deep hued gold, and leading with intense tropical fruit aromas. Superfruit Flavours of passionfruit and pomegranate are balanced with an unmistakable thirst quenching tartness; whisking you away to a care-free island paradise. Best enjoyed near a body of water.

Not the Stoic – Deschutes Brewery


Limited Reserve Series

From Bend Oregon’s Deschutes Brewery comes “Not the Stoic” a barrel aged Belgian quad.  The beer pours a ruby red colour with very little head.  The aroma consists of sweet cherries, dark fruits, malts, oak, molasses and pomegranate.  The flavour is of pomegranate, cherries, dark fruits, bourbon, oak, malts, molasses, sweetness and an alcohol finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 12.1% with an IBU of 15.  The bottle recommended holding onto this bottle for around a year before opening.  This beer may have been even better if I waited but I only had one bottle.  I am glad I opened this up when I did as it was amazing!

Commercial Description:  Aged and sequestered in select oak casks. The result – a contemplatively brewed quad created in homage to all those who doubted the original. This unrepentant rendition is definitively Not The Stoic.

Malt: Pilsner, Special B, Crystal Rye
Hops: Czech Saaz
Other: Pomegranate Molasses
Barrel-Aging: 11 months in 15% Pinot Noir and 15% Rye Whiskey Barrels

4 Way Fruit Ale – Howe Sound Brewing


Summer Seasonal

From Squamish BC’s Howe Sound Brewing comes the “4 Way Fruit Ale” a wheat ale.  This beer pours a very cloudy yellow with a decent white head.  The beer smells of fruits (Passionfruit, mango, raspberry and pomegranate as per the bottle) and wheat.  This beer does not have a super sweet flavor but more a slightly sweet almost tart taste that is dominated by Passionfruit, mango, raspberry and pomegranate with some wheat flavor mixed in.  The beer has an IBU of 14 and an alcohol content of 4.4%.

This beer was part of Mikes Craft Beer’s first ever tasting event and was rated as such: Stu 6/10, Tom 6/10, 9/10
