Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels 2017- Twin Sails Brewing

From Twin Sails Brewing in Port Moody comes their “Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels” a beer aged for one year in Bourbon Barrels for their second anniversary.  This was bottle 309 of 468.  The beer poured an opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of vanilla, bourbon, roasted malts, toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, anise with a sweet finish.  The flavour was of vanilla, bourbon, oak, anise, chocolate, toffee, espresso, roasted malts, brown sugar, coconut and very little bitterness.  The alcohol content is a cool 11.6% that is partially masked by the flavour of this beer.

Commercial Description:  Aged in select bourbon barrels since September 2016, this dense, inky imperial stout has big aromas of fudge, vanilla and espresso.  The palate brings an intense mix of chocolate, char, and coconut and a thick luscious mouth feel that leads into a warming, rich finish.  An intentionally low carbonation brings an exceptional spirit-like character to the beer.

From Yellow Dog Brewing in Port Moody in collaboration with AleSmith Brewing out of San Diego California comes their “Seeking Asylum Belgian Double IPA”.  The beer pours an amber colour with a white head. The aroma consists of Belgian yeast, tropical fruit, sweetness and floral hops.  The flavour is of Belgian yeast, tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus rind, low malt presence, dankness and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 8% with an IBU of 90.  Its no surprise to me that these two breweries would come together and make an awesome Double IPA!  Its probably almost gone off the market now but it was really tasty.

Commercial Description:  Seeking Asylum is a 8% abv and 90 IBU Belgian-style Double IPA co-created with San Diego’s Alesmith Brewing, described as “smooth and full-bodied with a west-coast twist. Imagine a west-coast DIPA mixed with a Belgian style triple!”

Vienna Amber Lager – Moody Ales

From Moody Ales out of Port Moody comes their “Vienna Amber Lager”.  The beer pours a deep amber colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of caramel malts, mild fruit and floral hops.  The flavour is of caramel, grainy malts, mild fruit, some resin and a very mild bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 19.  If you enjoy a good lager then you should pick this one up.

Commercial Description:  Robyn, who created our Vienna lager recipe, likes to pair this beer with bratwurst. Sho, another Moody Ales brewer, prefers it with carnitas. Makes sense—this style, originally developed in Vienna in the 1840s, lost popularity in Europe over the nineteenth century but thrived in Mexico with Austrian emigrant brewers. So, as you enjoy our malt-forward yet clean amber lager, remember that from Austria to Mexico to Canada, pork and beer unite us all.

Lusty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout – Moody Ales

From Moody Ales out of Port Moody comes their “Lusty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout”.  The beer pours a deep opaque brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of chocolate, caramel, cookies, roasted malts and some mild roast.  The flavour is of chocolate, caramel, cookies, dark fruit, roasted malts and some mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.8% with an IBU of 38.  This one has the body more like a porter but is very tasty.  I am glad that this  beer has come back this year.

Commercial Description:  Some say the only ingredients in a beer should be barley, hops, yeast and water. We say, the more the merrier. The Lusty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is brewed with chocolate malt and cocoa powder, then conditioned on cocoa nibs for an intense milk chocolate flavour. Oats contribute a baked oatmeal cookie aroma. A perfect treat right before bed.

If a pineapple, a mango and a beer had a baby, this is the hop chowdery spawn they would create. Two massive dry hops give this beer a huge hop forward aroma and flavour with big notes of pineapple, mango and citrus.
