Black Strap Boot Strapper Porter – Beau’s All Natural Brewing (Crannóg Ales)


From Beau’s All Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill Ontario co-operatively brewed with Crannóg Ales of Sorrento BC comes their “Black Strap Boot Strapper Porter”.  The beer pours a deep chestnut colour with a tan head.  The aroma consists of molasses, coffee, chocolate and a sweet finish.  The flavour is of molasses, chocolate, ash, roasted malts, plum, burnt coffee resin and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.8% with an IBU of 30.  The body was a bit on the thin side but the flavour was right on point!

Commercial Description:  Blackstrap Bootstrapper is a classic British-style porter brewed with an addition of fairtrade organic blackstrap molasses. The recipe uses Challenger hops harvested from Left Fields, the certified organic farm on which Crannóg Ales stands, located in the sunny Shuswap region of BC.

Food pairing as per brewery:  Beef, oyster and porter pie (British traditional pie), bacon-wrapped scallops on the BBQ, dark chocolate pudding.

Salted Chocolate Porter – Steamworks Brewing


From Steamworks Brewing in Burnaby BC comes their “Salted Chocolate Porter”.  The beer pours an opaque black colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of chocolate, mild roasted malts, caramel and salt.  The flavour is of chocolate, roasted malts, ash, peat, earth, caramel and salt.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 25.  You don’t often find salt in a beer other than a Gose but this really worked.

Commercial Description:  The first release in our illumination series, this Salted Chocolate Porter offers chocolate and vanilla aromas and a full body with rich chocolate flavours from a well-balanced combination of toasted and chocolate malts. While the addition of hand-harvested Pacific Ocean Fleur de Sel from Vancouver Island Salt Co. provides an intriguing flourish on the finish. It pours near black with a tan head and is a rich and robust brew sure to please classic porter lovers and adventurous imbibers alike.

Hawaiian Coconut Porter – Brewsters Brewing Company


From Brewsters Brewing Company out of Calgary, Alberta comes their “Hawaiian Coconut Porter”.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of coconut, chocolate,  roasted malts with a semi sweet finish.  The flavour is of chocolate, coconut, roasted malts, earth and a very mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 32.  This is an enjoyable porter with just enough going on to be a great choice for a standard fridge 6 pack.

Commercial Description:  Like a trip to the Islands! We take a classic British porter and infuse it with fresh coconut.

 

Reina De Fuego Mexican Chocolate Porter – Dead Frog Brewery


From Aldergove’s Dead Frog Brewery comes their new “Reina De Fuego” Mexican Chocolate Porter.  The beer pours a very deep brown with a brown head.  The aroma consists of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate and chili peppers.  The flavour is of chocolate, roasted malts, bitterness, chili peppers, coffee and earth.  The alcohol content comes in at 6% with an IBU of 34.  This beer is both sweet and spicy.  If that does not appeal to your this may not be your beer but if if does then you need to pick this one up!

Commercial Description:  A SMOOTH AND SWEET, MEDIUM BODIED PORTER FEATURING FLAVOURS OF CHOCOLATE AND TOFFEE, WITH A LIGHT HINT OF CHILI PEPPER HEAT ON THE FINISH.

Food Pairing as per brewery:  MEXICAN CHOCOLATE, BRIE CHEESE, ROAST BEEF

Baltic Porter – Steel & Oak Brewing


From New Westminster’s Steel & Oak Brewing comes their brand new seasonal the “Baltic Porter”.  The beer pours a deep brown colour with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, licorice, toffee, chocolate and sweetness.  The flavour is of chocolate, roasted malts, licorice, toffee, hint of coffee, earth, hint of saltiness and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.6% with an IBU of 28.  This might be one of my favourite releases from Steel & Oak Brewing.  It has all the makings of a great beer and comes in the winter a great time for porters.

Commercial Description:  At 7.6% and originally brewed by countries bordering the Baltic Sea this Porter was brewed in a city that borders the Fraser River. Fermented with lager yeast, the S&O Baltic Porter has notes of licorice, cocoa, and toffee followed by a lightly spiced finish. This beer will be available mid month.
