5th Anniversary Ale (Barrel Aged Hazy IPA) – Powell Brewery


From Powell Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “5th Anniversary Ale” a Hazy IPA aged in Pinot Noir Barrels with Brettanomyces  for 6 Months.  The beer pours a cloudy orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of brett funk, floral hops, pinot noir and oak from the barrel aging.   The flavour is of brett funk, citrus rind, tropical fruit, melon, pinot noir, oak, resin, yeast and bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 7.6%.  This is a definite winner of a beer and very worthy of being the 5th Anniversary beer!

Commercial Description:  Our 5th Anniversary beer features new and old world techniques.  Starting with a Hazy IPA, agin it for 6 months in Pinot Noir barrels with Brettanomyces, and finally dry-hopping it with Ekuanot Cyro hops just before bottle conditioning.  Barnyard brett meets hazy IPA.

4TH ANNIVERSARY ALE (Barleywine) – Powell Street Craft Brewery


From Powell Street Craft Brewery in East Vancouver comes their “4TH ANNIVERSARY ALE” a barleywine aged in oak barrels with brettanomyces.  They made 4 barrels of this beer and in the end did not blend them so all 4 beers are quite different.  This review is of a bottle of 3 of 4 barrels as I was told this was the funkiest of the 4.  This was bottle 64 of 266.  The beer pours a deep chestnut brown with cloudiness and a tan head.  The aroma consists of big funkiness, dark fruits, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and sweetness.  The flavour is of brett funk, dark fruits, toffee, treacle, brown sugar, roasted malts, oak,  earth, bitterness and alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at 10.4% with an IBU of 44.  I had  this beer on tap at the brewery and also this bottle and being a huge barleywine fan I was very excited about how this beer turned out.  Not only was it a great barleywine but the Brettanomyces really added some amazing character and Brett is not often added to this style for some reason.

Commercial Description:  Our fourth anniversary ale is a Barleywine aged for 18 months in French oak barrels with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis and Brettanomyces Lambicus. A pleasant and distinct funky aroma leads into flavours of dried dark  stone fruits and umami overtones which are then complemented with a dry sherry-like finish.

BC Beer Awards 2016 / Beer Festival – October 15th 2016


With October brings BC Craft Beer Month and with that brings the BC Beer Awards.  Once again this year the awards ceremony and beer festival were held at the Croatian Cultural Centre.  This year the event was held on October 15th just a little earlier than last year.

I have been attending the BC Beer awards for many years now and it seems to be getting better and better.  With the industry exploding like it is in the province this event will only get better.  Much like always the event began at 4pm and ended at 9pm.  The festival was once again in two room and even had some beer pouring in the front entrance area.  This year there were 75 breweries pouring beer at the festival and 5 cideries.

Stephen Quinn from CBC Radio was once again the voice of the BC Beer Awards this year.  This year 83 breweries entered beers into the competition and there were 750 different beers entered.  Once again this was more breweries entering beer up from 70 last year.  Its nice to see that once again this year more breweries have come out to try their luck.  Instead of doing the awards at the end of the night this year they started it near the beginning.  Lets get to the winning beers of the year!

This year’s Best of Show Flagship IPA is even more exciting as Julia Hanlon of Steamworks becomes the first female Head Brewer in BC to win this award!  A huge congratulations is in order for this!

Once the awards finished everyone went back to enjoying the beer that was on hand.  This was once again an amazing event with amazing beer being poured as well as great people be it craft beer fans or brewery staff.  Every year this event gets bigger and better!  Here is to another year of sticking it to the flavourless garbage that macro breweries make.

Once again like last year I helped set the festival up between 10:30am and 3pm.  It makes the festival even more fun when you are able to get involved in any part of the event.

Yami Dark Sour – Powell Street Craft Brewery (Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks)


Brewed in East Vancouver at Powell Street Craft Brewery in collaboration with Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks comes their “Yami Dark Sour” brewed with Saskatoon berries.  The beer pours a very deep red colour with a light red head.  The aroma consists of tons of berries most likely Saskatoon berries, sweetness and some mild tartness.  The flavour is of berries, mild tartness, sweetness, some herbal notes and some malts.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.8% with an IBU of 8.  I wish the Saskatoon berries had a little more of a kick but the flavour was still quite good and it is a well made sour regardless.

Commercial Desciption:  The second collaboration with Fuggles & Warlock is here! The Japanese word for darkness, Yami is a dark sour wheat with Saskatoon berries. Big juicy flavours and aromas from the Saskatoon berries are complimented by a pleasant sour finish.

Murderers Row Cask Event 2016 – Pentiction


Every year the Fest-Of-Ale seems to get better just like this year.  With being a one of the beer judges for three years straight now Murderers Row ends up being my favourite event of the weekend.  With the prospect of judging beer starting at 10am Saturday we have to take Friday’s festival and after parties easy.  With the judging done and lots of food sampled on Saturday the Murderers Row Cask event is when we can let loose.  Like every year the Cask event was held at the Kettle Valley Station Pub in Penticton right after the festival but took a separate ticket than the event and is hard to come by.  With every brewery that has a cask on tap having a few people at the cask event and many other breweries staff hanging out you are guaranteed to meet people in the beer industry at this party.

In the past the ticket included a branded glass but this year they changed things up.  Everyone in attendance this year got a T-shirt with the event logos.  We also got our first pint of beer free.  With the change of glassware this year though there was a new option added.  You could either buy a pint of one of the casks or a flight making it much easier to test out all 14 casks!  A task that would be fool hardy if they only poured pints.

Like every year I tried to sample every cask and I was so close this year only missing one cask.  My big mistake was that I missed the same bloody cask two years in a row.  I need to try out Firehall Brewery’s Gin and Tonic beer!

This continues to be one of my favourite cask events every year!  The only cask event that comes close is held in Surrey twice a year.  with great beer, great people and a great live musician it makes for an amazing night!
