Steve’s Beer Advent Calendar Day 3 – Moralité American IPA – Brasserie Dieu du Ciel

Mikes wife gift me a beer advent calendar she put together herself. I thought I should post each day as a review. Now, you’re wondering: where are days 1 and 2? I got this on day two and didn’t think of this series until today so I’ll catch up.

So, on with the show.

From Brasserie Dieu du Ciel in St Jerôme, Quebec I got Moralité American IPA. It pours a beautiful, hazy hay yellow with a creamy head of very fine bubbles. Carbonation is invisible through the haze.

The nose is super herbaceous. Celery and thyme come forward quickly with a little raw, wet cereal grain following. There might be a hint of tangerine.

The flavours are super hop forward. Herb-y bitterness really dominates, so much so that it is almost hot or spicy. A sweet tangerine note offers a nice counter to the hops. The finish goes on forever with bitter hops.

Commercial description: The concept of Morality is perhaps a subjective one, as the history of alcohol in Quebec May demonstrate. This IPA is brewed with a dare-we-say excessive quantity of Simcoe, Citra and Centennial hops. The dry finish is highly aromatic and slightly resinous, invoking tropical fruits atop dominant hop bitterness. Moralité was crafted at our Montreal location in 2012 in collaboration with John Kimmich of The Alchemist brewery in Vermont USA.

Brett Zeste Saison – Microbrasserie Le Castor

From Microbrasserie Le Castor in Rigaud Quebec comes their “Brett Zeste Saison”.  The beer pours a cloudy orange with a white head.  The aroma consists of lemon, citrus zest, mild brett funk and some sweetness.  The flavour is of citrus zest, lemon, yeast, wheat, rye spice, pepper, herbs, resin, mild Brettanomyces and some bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5%.  This was a very interesting Saison and I would recommend picking up a bottle if you can find it.

Commercial Description:  As spring breezes refresh our spirits and make us think of warmer months ahead, so too will this tribute to traditional Belgian farmhouse ales. Brewed with authentic saison & wild Brettanomyces yeasts, we have added a lot of citrus zest & juice to the mix. Throw in some cracked pepper, and classic rustic yeast character, and you’ve got a refreshingly dry companion to your summer thirst.

Yakima IPA – Microbrasserie Le Castor

From Microbrasserie Le Castor in Rigaud Quebec comes their “Yakima IPA”.  Thanks to Cee of Beer & Other Shhh Podcast for this beer!  The beer pours an orange colour with a white head. The flavour is of orange, citrus, tropical fruits, juicy and floral hops. The flavour is of herbal hops, resin, orange, tropical fruits, mild caramel and bitterness. The alcohol content comes in at 6.5% with an IBU of 75.  This was a really enjoyable IPA and I am glad I got the chance to try it!

Commercial Description:  This beer is a celebration of the mighty West Coast hop, grown east of the Cascade mountains. Multiple varieties are used in this ale, at several different points in the brewing process. With emphasis on late hop & dry hop additions, we serve up juicy citrus flavours & aromas on a bed of pale malt.

Double IPA 128 – Farnham Ale & Lager

From Farnham Ale & Lager in Farnham Quebec comes their “Double IPA 128”.  Thanks to Cee of Beer & Other Shhh Podcast for this beer!  The beer pours a copper orange colour with a beige head.  The aroma consists of citrus, grass, pine and some bready and caramel malt notes.  The flavour is of herbal hops, citrus, mild pine, resin, bitterness, earth, caramel and some mild alcohol.  The alcohol content comes in at 7% with an IBU of 128.  I really enjoyed this beer and I am just happy I managed to get my hands on a can of it!

Soirée Dieu Du Ciel – Steel Toad Brewpub

On February 25th, 2017 UnTapped Craft Imports and Steel Toad Brewpub in Vancouver hosted the Soirée Dieu Du Ciel.  When you hold a party with this epic Quebec brewery and the master brewer Jean Francois in attendance you know you are in for a treat.

The $40 ticket got you entry into the event between 2pm and 5pm and that included a commemorative glass and 4 beer tokens.  The real star of the show was the rare beer that have not been seen in British Columbia as of yet.  These beers included the following:

Moralité (American IPA)
Ultra Mosaika (Ultra Mosaic Pale Ale)
Hélium (Helles Lager)
L’Austérité (American Barleywine)
Grande Noirceur 2015 (Imperial Stout)
Hérétique Blonde
Hérétique Obscura (Funky Black Beer)
Rigor Mortis Brandy/Cognac (Abbey-Style Brown Ale)
Isseki Nicho Pinot 2015 (Imperial Black Saison aged in Pinot Noir Barrels)
Exorciste Mûres 2015 (Blackberry Sour Whete)
Péché Véniel 2015 (coffee Stout)

Bottle
Exorciste
Solstice D’Hiver Barrel Aged
Peche Mortel Barrel Aged

This was the ultimate introduction to the beers of Dieu Du Ciel!  I have never had a bad beer from this brewery but these are the crème de la crème from them.  Why not get to know a brewery with their absolute bests?

With great events comes great people usually.  Here are my shots as well as some from Whats Brewing and Vine & Hops Wine and Craft Beer Tours.  It was great to meet Jean Francois the Master Brewer and chat with him about beer.

My absolute favourites from this event include the Grande Noirceur 2015 (Imperial Stout), Hérétique Obscura (Funky Black Beer) and the absolute winner the Rigor Mortis Brandy/Cognac (Abbey-Style Brown Ale).

If you are not familiar with this brewery yet it is time to get familiar.  Their beer is available at liquor stores on the West Coast and well worth picking up.  This is truly one of the best breweries in Canada.
