Burning Rock Ale – Green Leaf Brewing Co

From North Vancouer’s Green Leaf Brewing comes their “Burning Rock Ale” a Steinbier.  A Steinbier is not mashed in the same way as most ales.  This ale is brewed by added burning hot stones to the mash to heat and sear in the flavours.

The beer pours a ruby brown colour with a creamy tan head.  The aroma consists of roasty malts, candied caramel, dark fruits and some floral hops.  The flavour is of roasted malts, smoke, caramel, dark fruits, toasted nuts, resin and hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 26.  This beer really reminds me of a very mild Barleywine.  I am going to dub it a Session Barleywine.  I really enjoyed this beer as it hits all of the check boxes for a great barleywine style ale but the alcohol content is very sessionable.  I recommend this beer for anyone that likes a barleywine, smoked ale or just a great esoteric beer.

Learn a bit more about the beer

Commercial Description:  Beer inspired by fire and rock. When red-hot granite meets beer wort that sears itself into the beer and then into the imagination. The taste of this beer is all about malt and the unique range of caramelized flavors that come from this most unusual process.
