Midnight Peach Dark Ale – Tin Whistle Brewing

From Penticton BC’s Tin Whistle Brewing comes their “Midnight Peach Dark Ale”.  The beer pours a very deep copper colour almost brown with a tan head.  The aroma consists of peaches, caramel and honey and chocolate.  The flavour is of peaches, honey, caramel, chocolate, some roasted malts and maybe a hint of earth and coffee.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.5%.  Who would have thought that chocolate and peaches would go so well together?  Oh wait that is a gimme.  This is a tasty new release from Tin Whistle Brewing and would go very well with desert.

Commercial Description:  Straight from the Okanagan comes this unique blended beer with hints of chocolate and caramelized honey combined with succulent peaches to create a full bodied dark fruit ale.

NR. 19 GARÚN (Imperial Stout) – Borg Brugghús

I had never seen a beer available in Canada from the Country of Iceland.  This has all changed now as I have found a beer from the brewery Borg Brugghús called the “NR. 19 GARÚN” which is an Imperial Stout.  The Imperial Stout pours an opaque black colour with a brown head.  The aroma consist of roasted malts and some chocolate but the aroma is not all that prominent.  The flavour is of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, bitterness and some alcohol in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 11.5%.  I would have to agree with sites like Beer Advocate and Ratebeer that call this a world class beer as it hits the spot in just the way an Imperial Stout should.

Commercial Description:  “Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales “The deacon of Dark River (Myrká).” A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!”

Milk Stout – Black Bridge Brewery

From Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current Saskatchewan comes their “Milk Stout”.  The stout pours a deep opaque black with a brown head.  The aroma consists of roasted malts, chocolate and an overall sweetness.  The flavour is of roasted malts, chocolate, lactose, earthiness and an overall sweetness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.3% with an IBU of 25.  This is a pretty darn good example of a milk stout although not the best I have had.

Commercial Description:   Darker doesn’t always mean stronger! A stout’s roasty signature quality comes from barley that is roasted and unmalted.  This beer pours a dark black with the aroma of dark chocolate and dried fruit.  The sweetness is balanced by the roasted malt, with a rich and creamy mouthfeel.  When possible please enjoy our beer from a glass to experience it fully.

Recommended serving temperature: 50°F/ 10°C.
