Special Edition Cask Night – Big Rock Urban Brewery

On Monday August 3rd, 2015 I was invited to a Special Edition Cask Night that was held inside the brewery at Big Rock Urban.  The event was invite only version of their Monday Night Cask Nights they hold every week and made for a great time!

There were 4 casks on offer including two from Big Rock (Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA, German Pale Ale) and one from Real Cask (Summer Ale) and Howe Sound Brewing (Sky Pilot with Spruce Tips).  Even though Peppercorns and Strawberry may not sound like a match made in heaven it was by far my favourite of the night!

Like I said my favourite cask of the night was the Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA as shown below.

Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA
Apperance – Copper colour with off white head.
Aroma – Peppercorns that almost overshadow strawberry notes completely.
Flavour – lots of peppercorns followed by hops bitterness, resin and just a hint of strawberry.
Final Thoughts – It may sound like an odd pairing but almost to a person it was everyone’s favourite of the night.

Surprisingly this was actually my first time inside the brew house itself at Big Rock Urban so I took a bunch of photos of the brewing equipment.  This is one beautiful brewery!

It was a great night on a holiday Monday and I was happy I got the invite.  If you have not checked out Big Rock Urban Brewery yet you should head over on a Monday for their cask night and have some great food to boot!

Sky Pilot Northwest Pale Ale – Howe Sound Brewing

Howe Sound Brewing brewed a new pale ale in collaboration with the brand new Sea To Sky Gondola project both located in Squamish BC.  The beer is the “Sky Pilot Northwest Pale Ale” and is named after Sky Pilot Massif a prominent peak on the Squamish skyline seen from the Sky Pilot Suspension bridge.  The beer pours an orange/gold colour with a white head.  The aroma consists floral hops, citrus and caramel malts.  The flavour is of hops bitterness, pine, citrus, caramel malts with a mildly earthy finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 5% with an IBU of 30.  This is a very solid Northwest Pale Ale and can be enjoyed either in bottles or on tap at the Sea To Sky Gondola on the patio or inside the cafe.

Malts:  Canaidan Two Row, specialty malts
Hops:  Cascade, Centennial, Summit hops

Commercial Description:  Brewed in collaboration with the Sea to Sky Gondola opening, May 16, 2014, this  refreshing, golden pale ale with an assertive hop aroma. Brewed with Canadian two row malt, specialty malts and a blend of Cascade, Centennial and Summit hops, premium Squamish water and American Ale yeast. A delicious modern classic. Enjoy the experience!

Food pairing as per brewery:  The noticeable hop profile in this ale allows it to stand up to spicier foods such as curry and tacos.
