Mélange à Trois (Fellowship 2017) – Strange Fellows Brewing


From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their fourth of four beer of 2017 in their Fellowship Club the “Mélange à Trois” a barrel aged Brett Bruin.  The beer pours a deep reddish brown with a tan head.  The aroma consists of brett funk, mild fruit, berries, malt, oak, chocolate and caramel.  The flavour is of brett funk, sour, caramel, toffee, chocolate, roasted malts, smoke, oak, leather, earth, bitterness and citrus rind.  The alcohol content comes in at 6.5%.  Not the standard Bruin but it is a really good brew and I look forward to the 2018 Fellowship.

Kriek (Fellowship 2017) – Strange Fellows Brewing


From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their third of four beer of 2017 in their Fellowship Club the “Kriek” a Lambic Style Ale.  The beer pours a red colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of cherries, berries, tart funk, oak and sweetness.  The flavour is of with a dry finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  This is one great beer and possibly my favourite of the Fellowship so far.

Commercial Description:   With the Holiday season just around the corner, we are excited to announce that today the third beer in this year’s Fellowship will be ready for pick up! The beer, a Kriek-inspired ale aged in oak barrels with Okanagan cherries is a style we have always adored and this is, we feel, an homage to a tradition that has inspired us for years.  Kriek is the Flemish word for a Lambic beer made with cherries, and Lambic is a class of sour beer made using spontaneous fermentation. Just as Champagne comes from a particular region of France, Lambic comes from the Pajottenland, a valley that runs from Brussels to the South West. Because Clark Drive is not in the Pajottenland, we classify this beer “Lambic-style” in respect of a centuries-old tradition. In our opinion these are some of the coolest beers in there world.  If you are familiar with the style, you will notice that our Kriek is a touch more sour than those examples from Belgian lambic producers Cantillon or Drie Fonteinen. When opening the bottle, you will be hit with aromas of vanilla, oak, and sweet cherries. The cherries we used impart a juicy fruit character, a touch of sweetness and cinnamon. Just as with the Little Red One, we recommend drinking this beer at cellar temperature rather than cold from the fridge.

Little Red One with Black Currants (Fellowship 2017) – Strange Fellows Brewing


From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their second of four beer of 2017 in their fellowship club the “Little Red One with Black Currants” a Lambic Style Ale.  The beer pours a deep red with a reddish head.  The aroma consists of black currents, dark fruit, red wine, oak and some tartness.  The flavour is of black currents, dark fruit, red wine, balsamic vinegar, earth, tobacco, tartness and some oak in the finish.  The alcohol content comes in at 6%.  This is a fantastic Lambic Style beer with a very full flavour profile and fits the Lambic style well.  I can not wait for the last two releases of this years Fellowship.

Commercial Description:  After months of tasting, note taking, and patience, we finally feel ready to announce that starting at 3pm this coming Thursday, November 16th we will be releasing our second Fellowship beer – Little Red One Batch 2 (LRO 2).  This West Coast Lambic-Style Sour with black currants from the Fraser Valley has been barrel-aged for over a year and is bottle conditioned. We liked the character that the currants bestowed upon this beer so much in Batch 1 that we decided to add even more black currants for Batch 2! This beer pours a deep red with aromas and flavours of oak, black tea, and tobacco. The currants lend berry character but with a dry herbal note (rather than sweetness).

 

Golden Enigma Smash ISA – Strange Fellows Brewing


From Strange Fellows Brewing Company in East Vancouver comes their “Golden Enigma Smash ISA”.  This Single Malt Single Hop beer was made with Enigma hops and Golden Promise malts.  The beer pours a straw yellow colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of citrus, maybe a hint of tropical fruits and some floral hops.  The flavour is of citrus, mild tropical fruit, citrus rind, resin, biscuit and some low bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 5.5% with an IBU of 45.  Single malt single hop beers can sometimes fall into the bland territory but this one was a nice refreshing one and I will be having more in the future.

Commercial Description:  This Single Malt and Single Hop SMaSH Pale Ale was brewed with the big Aussi hop Enigma and the Scottish malt variety Golden Promise. Balanced between a sweet malt backbone and assertive resinous, fruity hop character this Session Pale Ale reveals in an uncomplicated way the nature of these unique ingredient varieties.

Food pairing as per brewery:  Fish and Chips, Strong Cheese, Burgers

Berliner Geist (Fellowship 2017) – Strange Fellows Brewing


From Strange Fellows Brewing in Vancouver comes their first of four beer of 2017 in their fellowship club the “Berliner Geist Barrel-Aged Berliner Weisse”.  The beer pours an orange colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of tartness, sweetness, citrus, orange, vanilla and oak.  The flavour is of tartness, lemon, vanilla, oak, sweetness, citrus rind with a good acidic finish.   Especially for a 4.5% alcohol this one is huge on flavour while not packing a huge punch on the alcohol side.  I am really happy to be part of the Fellowship again this year.

Commercial Description:  BERLINER GEIST: This barrel-aged and bottle conditioned Berliner Weisse is distinctly sour and complex (refreshing), with a delicate woody vanilla character and an oaky aroma.  At 5% ABV this is a slightly lighter but deeply flavourful release perfect for laying down or enjoying on a summer evening.
