Granville Island Brewing Summer Ale Boat Cruise – Vancouver

A few weeks ago I was invited on a boat cruise with Granville Island Brewing to celebrate their Lions Summer Ale.

Who would turn down a boat cruise in the Vancouver Harbor?  The bar on board was serving their Lions Summer Ale as well as some other Granville Island Brewing favourites.  Personally I stuck with the beer of honor for the day.  I enjoyed the first few of these beers when I had them on a cloudy day but I can say for certain that it pairs even better on a sunny warm summer day.

The boat brought us on a scenic tour of the harbour including around Stanley Park and around the Convention Centre.  They had tasty snacks to go with the great views.  They also had some live music to liven up the mood.

Wherever you find yourself be it on a boat, patio or some other beautiful location this would be a great companion!  Pick up some for yourself soon.

Lions Summer Ale – Granville Island Brewing

From Granville Island Brewing out of Vancouver comes their new “Lions Summer Ale”.  This latest release was created by Kevin Emms the small batch brewer at Granville Island but brewed by the parent company Molson.  The beer pours a mildly cloudy golden colour with a white head.  The aroma consists of passion fruit, pineapple, grainy malts and some floral hops.  The flavour is of passion fruit, pineapple, grain, bready malts, very mild tartness and mild bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.7% with an IBU of 19.  While I find the Lions Winter Ale a bit to sweet for my taste I can definitely get behind this fruity flavourful ale.

Commercial Description:  Like the twin peaks that shine above Vancouver’s coastline, Lions Summer Ale beams with the bright, refreshing tastes of summer. Lively tropical fruit notes balanced with an easy-going personality are perfect after a paddle on the water, a hike up to your favourite lookout or wherever your next sunshine adventure takes you.

Summer Ale – Steamworks Brewing

The aroma consists of orange, orange peel, yeast, wheat and just an overall fruity finish. The flavour is of wheat, yeast, orange, orange peel and Mild hops bitterness.  The alcohol content comes in at 4.8% with an IBU of 20.  This will be a tasty patio beer this summer!

Commercial Description:  Crisp and thirst quenching with a distinct citrus aroma, this wheat ale gets a refreshing kick from sweet orange peel, lemon peel and grains of paradise. The balance of bright citrus, fruity hops, and spice make this lively brew perfect for any summer day. Perfect for poolside chilling or more intrepid adventures.

Special Edition Cask Night – Big Rock Urban Brewery

On Monday August 3rd, 2015 I was invited to a Special Edition Cask Night that was held inside the brewery at Big Rock Urban.  The event was invite only version of their Monday Night Cask Nights they hold every week and made for a great time!

BigRockUrbanCask-27

There were 4 casks on offer including two from Big Rock (Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA, German Pale Ale) and one from Real Cask (Summer Ale) and Howe Sound Brewing (Sky Pilot with Spruce Tips).  Even though Peppercorns and Strawberry may not sound like a match made in heaven it was by far my favourite of the night!

Like I said my favourite cask of the night was the Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA as shown below.

BigRockUrbanCask-15

Pink Peppercorn Strawberry IPA
Apperance – Copper colour with off white head.
Aroma – Peppercorns that almost overshadow strawberry notes completely.
Flavour – lots of peppercorns followed by hops bitterness, resin and just a hint of strawberry.
Final Thoughts – It may sound like an odd pairing but almost to a person it was everyone’s favourite of the night.

Surprisingly this was actually my first time inside the brew house itself at Big Rock Urban so I took a bunch of photos of the brewing equipment.  This is one beautiful brewery!

It was a great night on a holiday Monday and I was happy I got the invite.  If you have not checked out Big Rock Urban Brewery yet you should head over on a Monday for their cask night and have some great food to boot!
